Background: Born the fifth son in a prosperous merchant’s household, Drayven’s childhood consisted mainly of learning how to keep the books for his family and to always realize how little use his family had for him outside of that fact. It was this neglect that allowed less desirable influences to enter Drayven’s life and slowly twist his thinking in a different direction.

Leaking information here and there to his new “friends”, Drayven soon found the acceptance he had craved growing up and learned to ignore the voice in his head that told him he was betraying his family. As far as he was concerned, none of his family members were ever wounded, and his family would write the occasional loss down as Beshaba’s fickle temper.

However, as the demands grew for Drayven to give more to the guild, he began to have second thoughts and when he said he would do it no more, they simply smiled as they left, stabbing him multiple times as he walked home that night.
When he awoke, his father was alone in the room with him. Looking up and seeing for the first time concern on his father’s face, Drayven’s actions hit him all at once, and he began to confess how everything had led to this evening. His father said nothing during Drayven’s tale, but the disappoint and hurt were plain to see.

As soon as he regained his strength, Drayven’s father made arrangements for him to begin his training as a priest of Waukeen. While on the surface, it seemed to be a move in Drayven’s best interests; the real reason was that Drayven’s father could not handle betrayal by one of his sons. Taking the measure for what it was, Drayven played along with the charade and moved to the temple.

While older than most of his fellow acolytes, Drayven quickly made up for lost time as he quickly mastered the basic tenets of the faith and simple orisons. Ordained a priest two years later, Drayven was relieved to see his family attending the first mass he was allowed to give.

As news reached Athkatla that the civil war had finally came to an end in Tethyr, the church wasted no time in searching for volunteers to go into the healing land and offer Waukeen’s blessings and guidance. Wanting to continue re-earning his family’s favor, Drayven was among the first to sign up.

Background:

Vedrix was sent to the monastery because he was too clever, curious, and incorrigible for his own good. Even under the best of circumstances he would have been a trying child, and he was not born into the best of circumstances, being the last of 8 children.

It's not that his family was--is--particularly poor. Father was--is--running a decent trade in fine textiles. But 8 children is still a bit much for a family climbing the ranks of the middle class, and in any case there was no way to provide Vedrix the sort of distractions he required to keep him from making a mess at home, taking a pen to father's books, and so on. So his parents (partly with his own interests in mind, and partly their own sanity) sent him off to a remote monastery of Ilmater, where he would be turned into a manageable member of society.

The Monastery of *** is located at the edge of the Barony of Avery, half a day's hike from the small village of Hillrar. ***

Life for Vedrix at the monastery was a struggle. Initiates were put through a challenging regimen of physical and mental exercises. (The spiritual exercises come later.) Physically, Vedrix was a fairly large boy (and grew into a fairly large man), but was not terribly well-coordinated, and was also, well, lazy, to boot. Mentally, Vedrix was quite gifted, but not well-disciplined, and the monks were, of course, all about discipline.

...

Then late one afternoon, a messenger from the village, mounted on one of its few decent riding horses, came calling to the monastery. Barely pausing to catch his breath, the rider told everyone in earshot that the Baron's men had come to Hillrar that morning, with papers calling for the mayor to send the Baron at least two able men to join the ranks of the Duke. The messenger came with a paper of his own, from the mayor, asking the monks to speak up on the village's behalf, for there were few men in the village, and to spare any for conscription could cost the community dearly.

The monks could not refuse, but nor could they think of how they could answer this call for help in any useful way. They could, of course, argue and demonstrate in clear terms that the Baron's demands were unfair and unreasonable, but this would be unlikely to do any good. If the villagers refused to answer the Baron, and it came down to force, then the monks... ah, but it must not come down to force.

Vedrix provided the answer. A member of their order would go in the stead of the two villagers demanded by the Baron. For surely a monk, trained through long years in the monastery in mind, body and soul, would easily be the equal of any two men of the village, no matter how strong and hardy they might be.

And Vedrix would be the one to go.
