I completely do not understand these defenses of the existing rule. The 1 square loophole was a lazy editing error that should never have been allowed to see print.

I houserule charge to allow 1 square lunges, which do not gain the attack bonus or other benefits of charging.

Wotc fixed this bug in their game by creating a feat (that nobody would ever take).
