The 13th Warrior?

You may be right. We don't know if he still held his interest in Beowulf to his dying day. But I'd like to think so.

Now, are you still going to continue to razz me on my grammar, or stick to the topic at hand?

Well, considering that Tolkien was a linguist, is not grammar topical? :D

Don't mind Kent (Barendd Nobeard). I know him personally and he's merely joking in good fun. Along with Eric and Piratecat, he's one of the nicest people on this board and utterly free of guile or meanness. Well, maybe not when he gets behind the DM screen, but as a poster, that is. :)

The pet peeve that stirs up the Grammar Nazi in me:

When people say "he should of done this" or "she could of done that." I see it all the time on these boards.

It's "could HAVE" not "could OF." This is basic grammar, not some technical thing like past participles and other stuff most of us don't care about. <- See? I'm more than willing to end my sentences with propositions!

Thus endeth my grammar rant.

You'll find that most people here aren't very receptive to propositions.

We like prepositions, though.

The former--now that krunchyfrogg has made that cool icon, I'll have to start using it to protect grammar everywhere. I have been trying to exorcise the Grammar Nazi from me (it came from a speech coach in college), but to no avail. It's been 17 years and I still am bothered by "poor" grammar. Not that I'm perfect or anything (no one is), but ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put. :D

But seriously, sorry if it bothered you. The thought of JRRT "appearing" on 'Crossing Over' just popped into my head when I read that. The only way to get the words out of my head is to write them down.

Now, to get back on topic... I know little of JRRT... but what little I know indicates (to me) that JRRT would have held his interest in Beowulf all his life. I mean, he's not the kind of guy to flit from one interest to another like someone with ADHD. At least, it seems that way to me.
