I'm posting this on behalf of my 10 year old son. He had expressed an interest in gaming already (when he was 4 or 5, iirc) but the yellow basic set (the "Adventure Game" linked to above) was his frst D&D set and his first real exposure to the game. He's still playing to this day, so I'd say it was instrumental in getting him into the game.

Not for me, but only because I started playing before the basic set was even known to me, or at least before it was released.

I did turn my little cousin on to D&D with the 3.5 basic set.

FWIW, the D&D Adventure Game was released in August 2000. I bought it to use the counters in my first 3e campaign.

Whatever my own opinion of the product might be, I think they were smart to get it out early.

You know, I don’t know that these polls serve any purpose, but I’m a bit surprised by the results. I mean, I kind of thought that ENWorlders would tend towards the “no” side, but maybe not quite so much.

Yeah, I know, but I didn't know about the Adventure Game until after I had already started playing 3e, which was also well before the 3.5 Basic Game was released.

My basic sets were way before then (OD&D Black box, AD&D Yellow box.) From then on, 3rd ed onward, I stuck to books.

Yeah. One opinion I see expressed a lot is that the older Basic Sets were a much more effective introduction to the hobby than the ones Wizards has produced. That’s part of the inspiration for this poll. Previous polls have suggested that most ENWorlders started with one of the older Basic Sets.

Forum polls certainly aren’t reliable, and ENWorlders are certainly a skewed subset of gamers, but the poll’s fun anyway.
