My guesses

Human, Halfling, Elf, Eladrin, Drow, Half-Elf, Dwarf, Tiefling and Draconic.

I know, I know. A lot of Elf. Not exactly what I want, just what I think. And I get Draconic from the guy in the back of this image. http://www.enworld.org/images/4e/phb.jpg

If I had to drop one guess its the Drow, and they will pull them back to be in the MM.

I have a hard time buying "drow" as a PC race. (at lease at launch.) They are redundant in many ways with the existing races.

Orcs or Half-Orcs are more likely, since they also give the option to have the dark past and fulfil a different character role then another elf type.

I would say that a minotaur would make the most sense. The creature is instantly recognized by non-players and highly iconic. If it's illustrated with an "Incredible Hulk" physique, it'll be big with new players.
Beyond the minotaur, what about (as some have suggested) a completely retooled orc. But how would they retool them? How about making them the reptillian race others have suggested? A dragonblooded orc! It could work!

That guy doesn't look draconic at all to me, but looks very much like a tiefling.

That’s what I thought at first too, but then I heard someone say the girl on the cover has horns. I looked and there is "something" coming out of her head. Maybe its a tira or something. But what really made me thing draconic is I took a look at the Dragon on the DMG cover to someone's suggestion.

Compare the male original Image to the dragon...

The horns, pointed chin and most of all the Tail! Looks more like the dragon. And notice how the dragon is looking through a crystal ball at the PCs from the PHB cover. It is an interesting tie.

The Tail is what really makes me think this.

Tiefling from Races and Classes

No serrated edge like the one above that I can tell, but has a simular red skin tone.

same tiefling, different image

Tail looks like it might be similar.

From Desert of Desolation mini's (Bottom of the page)

Same skin, same white hair, bone looking horns, but the tail looks more like a devil tail. The tail is the detail that I keep noticing.

and finally

I give you that he looks close to my boy on the PHB, but once again, classic devil tail.

I will grant you based on color scheme he looks like a Tiefling. But, that could be the throw off. Kind of like the Warlord leak. They put it out there right in front of everyone and well the warlord got caught. This one I think, is the secret that they gave us that slipped through.

Maybe I am crazy. :uhoh:

Keep in mind that those illustrations were drawn by different artists. They are obviously going to have distinctions because each artist is going to bring his own style, and D&D artists can get pretty wild in their visual interpretations of creatures. I wouldn't make too much of the similarities between the PHB and DMG covers because they were both drawn by Wayne Reynolds. :\
