Whereas I hope for some nice templates, that can achieve that, because with templates, it's easier to upgrade than downgrade!

Cheers, LT.

I like the new Pit Fiend with one exception - his weapon attack is treated as fire damage. That's just ludicrous. Adding fire damage to it is one thing, but why is the base weapon damage treated as fire? I really, really hope this isn't how they're doing flaming, shocking, etc. weapons...

[Edit] Oh, and I would have preferred if he was a Solo monster.

We've already seen an example of Frost weapons, and they deal extra Cold damage on a Critical Hit.

What's interesting is his attack is with a 'flametouched mace', which if it's anything like 3.5 means that Fire Elementals were involved in its creation.

Given the Lawful bent of devils (even if Law doesn't have any in-game meaning in 4e), I don't think devils should generally be solo monsters. They're supposed to be based around teamwork, and a solo monster with teamwork abilities kinda misses the point.

Also, keep in mind that there won't just be this one Pit Fiend. Being Elites, there will be more like 2 Pit Fiends, which then adds in 2 war devils (22nd level) and 8 legion devil legionnaires (21st level)

That means 12 baddies in the encounter.

I hope WotC comes up with a sample pit fiend group. Hopefully with only about five or six monsters. (All his buddies could be 26th-level but weaker than elite. I figure.)

The pictures we've seen of the MM shows that each monster type generally comes with a small number of typical encounters using that monster. For example, the gnoll page lists three encounters:
Level 5
  • 1 gnoll beastmaster
  • 6 hyenas
Level 6
  • 3 gnoll marauders
  • 2 evistro demons
Level 7
  • 1 gnoll demonic scourge
  • 2 gnoll claw fighters
  • 2 gnoll huntmasters
  • 1 cacklefiend hyena

I'd be very surprised if there weren't a couple of similar things with devils.

It doesn't have to be two Pit Fiends. I actually rather believe that the Pit Fiend to be accompanied by some other demon consort, like for example a horned devil as his faithul second-in-command (while writing this, I'm now thinking of Megatron and Starscream from Transformers Animated). :D

Plus if you want a solo nasty I think there will be a lot to chose from and given the 'economy of actions' a well played team of devils up to no good will probably kick the players asses more than one nasty brute even if the brute has more hp than the team combined.

Very true. Though the encounter can grow quickly once servitor devils start getting summoned!
