What do you think?

The initial posters on this thread pointed to actual published resources that justified the classes they listed. If you can expand on those references to explain your list, please do so and help out the rest of us.

The Paladin,
The Cleric,
The Druid,
The Ranger,
The Fighter,
The Warlord,
The Warlock,
The Rogue,
The Swordsinger,
The Bard,
The Wizard.
The Sorcerer?

The Paladin=known, official & from designer blogs, I suspect will be similar to Bo9S Crusader
The Cleric=known, official just about every source from designer blogs to art releases
The Druid=? Unknown, but it's got heavy traction and if it isn't in PHB1 it'll be in the next
The Ranger=? haven't seen a reference but I don't think they'll be taken out
The Fighter=known, official
The Warlord=known, official, also likely subsumed some of bard's stuff
The Warlock=known, official implementation not known
The Rogue=known, official multiple sources
The Swordsinger=known could be a talent tree but designer blog refers as if separate class
The Bard=? unknown likely subsumed by one of new classes
The Wizard=known, official
The Sorcerer=? unknown possibly gone

Already got 8 known officially released core classes and 8 was number same sources have used repeatedly. Possibility remains will be more core classes but not great.

Do you mean the "Swordmage"?

The blog states:
[BQ]It's a class we are going to design and publish someday, but it probably won't be in 2008...[/BQ]

I don't think anyone has thought of this yet, but might not the "Warlord" have also lapped up some of the Barbarian attributes like Rage and fast movement?

I mean, when I started thinking about where they may have gotten the character concept, I kept being drawn back to the old Xena and Hercules shows, with all those Warlords raiding and pillaging... While I am NOT saying that was the sole inspiration, that idea isn't exactly unique to those shows...

Just an idea...

Yep, both essentially sword-wielding melee casters just slightly different teminology. Since I won't sign up for that Insider nonsense I have to rely on quotes and all I'd seen was the part where it was (probably) a class but no mention of when.

Which pulls that off the PHB1 list. So now it looks like this:
The Paladin=confirmed official
The Cleric=confirmed official
The Druid=? possibly?
The Ranger=? think I've seen it anybody have refs?
The Fighter=confirmed official
The Warlord=confirmed official
The Warlock=confirmed official
The Rogue=confirmed official
The Swordsinger=no
The Bard=? don't think so?
The Wizard=confirmed official
The Sorcerer=? possibly?

I believe I posted the same theory a few weeks ago (can't do a search for it since I'm not a paying member, sorry). Using 'battle shouts' to inspire & encourage allies would be a 'warlord'-like thing to do, fit in with the known role, & not be too much of a departure from the barbarian of 3.5 in flavor.

Here's hoping we're right! :)

Ranger was mentioned as being a "striker" in that video interview with James Wyatt where he first detailed the roles thing. It's also shown up in playtest reports.

As far as barbarians and warlords... I doubt it. Just because the name sounds kind of pillagey? I'm sure warlord will have abilities resembling the Diablo 2 barbarian's shouts, but that's no reason to think it'll have anything from the 3.5 barbarian. I'm expecting rage to be a fighter talent.

(Though you should be able to multiclass warlord/fighter if you want both.)

I'm pretty sure 8 is the confirmed number. By Swordsinger, are you referring to Swordmage? Ditch the barbarian? Never!

Howndawg

Actually, and this is the point everybody keeps missing...8 was the 'confirmed' number over a month ago....At that time the Sorceror was also confirmed and the Warlock was confirmed 'out'.

My guess is that the confirmed number has changed and 8 was always the minimum.

No. When that was confirmed the only classes that were confirmed were the fighter, wizard, cleric & rogue.

It has been confirmed that 4E will have a sorcerer, but not that it will be in the PHB I.

Per the "confirming post"

Nobody has said which 8 classes are in or out of the PH1. We've talked about classes in seminars and on the boards, and we've mentioned way more than eight classes in them. All the classes in the 3.5 PH will appear at some point in the game's lifespan, but the only ones you can call "confirmed" in the PH1 are fighter, rogue, cleric, and wizard.

No, I'm with ya – love my monks, have done since 1st edition (Grandmaster of Flowers!).

I think I read a statement to the effect that all classes from 3.5 will eventually make it into 4th Ed. Can anyone verify this?

I too like the monk, and will be pining for it till the finally write it up.

But in the meantime it will be interesting to see how people homebrew monks and what of those features get incorporated into tne new class.

Remember, the second generation of classes will benefit from at least one additional year of development and fan feedback.

So don't think of the monk as being left out, think of him as going to grad school while the rest of the classes hit the job market with their BAs.
