The best comic books I'm currently reading

Sometimes I miss comics... [-snip-] ...but for the most part, I'm not sure I want to get back on that wagon.
And the answer is: Trades!

Screw the monthlies, screw the whole collector/collecting-thingy,
just pick up the trades for the titles you enjoy/think you'll enjoy.

Totally. The monthly collectible thing is such a disincentive for me at this point. I love Transformers and GI Joe, and I'm glad they have their own comics again, but...

EVERY issue of TF (and there are ~3 monthly series, too) comes in an Autobot cover, a Decepticon cover, and often a third limited cover.

EVERY issue of GI Joe (two series) comes with a Joe cover and a Cobra cover.

Being the anal completist I am (I collect every new TF toy still), I know if I got back into the monthlies, I'd be buying about a dozen comics a month and only getting 5 issues, storywise.

That's why I'm going with the Trades. :)

Heya:

The _best_ comics? Okay, stuff that I get that I know I'm guaranteed to enjoy: Amelia Rules, Ultimate Spider-Man, Liberty Meadows, and Powers, in no particular order. I know that after reading any of those, I'm gonna have a smile on my face.

I'd list stuff like Astro City but recent issues don't seem to have the same energy the comic had several years ago. JLA under Morrison was spectacular, recent writers not so much, and the current art borders on the physically painful. If we can count Barry Ween, then might as well count Frumpy the Clown. Both are awesome, when has something new involving either come out? Sadness. Exiles has started to become a bit depressing. Ultimates' digression into that alien shapeshifter invasion thing seemed silly and out of place, but up til then I thought it was great. Alias would be in my list in the first paragraph if it hadn't ended. I'm hoping The Pulse will grab me in the same way, but without naughty language, I'm doubtful. If an actual issue of Planetary comes out again this year (or next!), back it goes into my guaranteed enjoyment group. I like Smax the Barbarian, but I vastly prefer Top Ten, and I hope that starts up again. I'll give the series set during WW2 a try, too. Various Superman titles, Green Lantern, Flash (ugh, that art), Stormwatch:Team Achilles, I get out of inertia, I suppose. I like the PvPOnline comic book, but it's 99% old material. Liberty Meadows might be too, but since I don't follow it online or in the newspaper it feels all new to me. KoDT has been a bit of a bummer with Bob lately. More Bag Wars! Or something! Wow, this is a long paragraph.

Take care,
Dreeble

In my opinion, a comic gets you excited if you think about reading the next issue before it comes out. That being said, there are a few that I'm thinking about right now...

Negation - This is the best sci fi/action comic ever published. Tony Bedard's writing keeps me coming back every month. He maintains an excellent balance between dialogue and plot that should satisfy everyone, while continually throwing new twists at the reader. Paul Pellitter (sp?) is handling the art chores beautifully in a smooth style which reminds me of Alan Davis.

Fantastic Four - Mark Waid came on to this book with one of the most powerful character driven issues I've ever read (and the best Dr. Doom issue!), and after a tremendous storyline, he follows it up with another that actually explores the consequences of the heroes' actions. Superb stuff.

Teen Titans - Geoff Johns caught my attention on Flash and he won me over with JSA and Hawkman. With Teen Titans, I'm ready to stalk him! Enjoyable teen characters and classic villians made truly deadly are part and parcel for the book. Mike McKone's art work is as gorgeous as always, and I've even noticed the coloring which is outstanding (don't know who does it though)!

And, my guilty pleasure...
JLA/Avengers What can I say? The fanboy in me was giddy at the mention of a Busiek/Perez team up on this project and it hasn't let me down. WARNING: Purely for fanboys (and fangirls)!

Of course there are other books I collect and enjoy (superman/Batman, Amazing Spider-Man, Supreme Power, 1602, etc.) but these stand out each month.

So if the FF all screwy still or is it back to the original FF roster? That comic fell apart after John Byrne left, then Walt Simonson did a few good stories, then it fell apart even worse.

The FF consists of the original team: Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben, all in their original incarnations. Nobody has any funky costumes or mutations to deal with. The kids, Franklin and Valeria, do play a minor role which sets up the idea of the FF as a family rather than a super team like the Avengers. However, after the ending of last issue, I'm not sure how long we'll have a Fantastic Four around...
