Still waiting to hear from Tor, I have created a Yahoo group for those interested in helping with the project.

Hey folks,

I've just joined the Yahoo Group, although I'd prefer to see most of our "thinking out loud" occur here on the EN Boards.

Some thoughts on the Taken:

Are the Taken epic level, or deity level?

I think we all agree that "Taken" should be a template - but should it always be the same template, or should it vary according to who is doing the Taking? I can't recall off hand if there were any substantive differences noted in Lady's taking versus the Dominator's.

Is there a level beyond Taken? The Dominator can do it, and he's at least a 0-level deity I'd think, but what is the Lady (before she loses her powers)? Is she deity level? If she was, what is she post White Rose? Can a deity be stripped of her powers and become mortal?

Cheers,

I'd be careful about tossing around the deity levels on this... Perhaps a setting-specific equivalent, sure, but to use the rankings as listed in DDG is kinda off. After all, Limper, Catcher and them didn't grant spells. Even Kina was explained to be an uber-powerful sorceress that convinced people she was divine rather than a divinity as D&D defines such.

BTW, I signed up on the list, but I'm not sure my membership took. (Yahoo sucks.) Mind sending a test mail for me?

Hi Bendris,

Agreed. I guess I was thinking more simply in terms of game mechanics, and what is entailed with being a 0-level deity versus "just" epic level. If I recall correctly, 0-level deities cannot grant spells anyway?

Didn't mean to imply that any of the Taken would be deity-level; only, possibly, the Dominator and the Lady, i.e., those who can actually "Take" someone.

Done!

If either, I'd say Epic. Their magic doesn't seem to be beyond 9th-level D&D spells; the 'nearly impossible to kill' aspect may take some Epic tricks to get right.

Between Lady and the Dominator, probably not. Between Lady and what Longshadow did to Smoke, certainly. But I'm not sure that become Taken made any difference in Whisper, Feather, or Journey other than their allegiances. Harden and Raker (of the Circle of 18, never Taken) were probably tougher than Feather or Journey (who were).

Maybe a 'leveled' template that would scale like half-celestial?

I don't think I'd stat anything in the Black Comapny universe as true deity. Even Kina couldn't grant spells to priests.

I just read The Black Company last week, and now I can't find the rest! Argh!

I noticed that the series is being slightly re-vamped. I just picked up a spare copy of the first novel, and the cover has had a little makeover, which is an improvement. My local bookstores has most of the series on shelf, simply because there has lately been a resurgence in sales of the books.

There is an archive page of international BC covers, by the way, and we Americans got the short end of the stick. Royo did covers for many European translations, and they are quite good.

The actual act of being "Taken" does not impart any abilities from what I'm reading. Taken isn't a template its a binding ritual... its horrid, its cruel, it does nothing for the individual being Taken, all it does is give the Taker some control over you.

I do not think Taken should be a template. There should be a ritual The Taking... and its effects would be level dependent, the level difference between the Caster and the person Taken as well as the level of the Taker being concidered in the mecahnics.

The Taken (old and new) are just casters of varying power, whom someone of more power wanted to control.
