The Capable Hero

The Capable Hero is a specialized class tailored to subject matter experts, master craftsmen and hands-on academics. This specialized class includes the Crafts, Knowledge, Skills, and Social talent trees, each focusing on a different aspect of the Capable Hero’s niche. Whether a consultant, mastermind or well-traveled adventurer, the Capable Hero can either be an expert on a specific subject or proficient in a wide-variety of skills.

A specialized class is a step between a basic class and an advanced class. Its main purpose is to allow a level of specialization in low-level games. These classes are open to ordinaries.

The Capable Hero includes the Capable Hero PDF, the Capable Hero OGC document which gathers all the open game content into a Rich Text Format file, and two pieces of art from the Capable Hero PDF.

The Capable Hero is from SEP’s Roles and Classes line. Look for the Combat Hero and the Cover Hero, both specialized classes from SEP, and the Counter-Terrorism Assaulter, the Special Operations Marksman, and the Spec Ops Recce, prestige classes from SEP. Finally, all the talent trees from these classes will be presented in "Roles and Classes: Talent Trees Assembled."

This 8-page product includes cover, back cover, 5 pages of content and 1 page of legal text. Along with class information, this product includes 2 ready-made NPCs.

This is a nice and interesting little book. It is created for d20 modern and serves a nice niche of a class that exists between the base classes and the advanced classes. The PDF as a I said is little; only coming in at eight pages and that includes a cover and back over and OGL page. The book is written by Fraser Ronald and he has done a good job with it. The art by Dean Martin is also nicely done and in color. There are also two larger pieces of art in black and white as separate files that come with the PDF . They are same pieces of art that come in the book but they are larger and look really good. That was a good addition to the PDF. The layout is also nicely done and that brings the art and writing all together. Rob Wakefield is to be thanked for that and the challenges of lay out are something often over looked by people. A bad lay out is relatively apparent while a good one usual goes unnoticed. The main PDF is color but there is also a word file of the written text for easy printing. The main PDF does not have book marks though in a book this small book marks are not as useful.

The Capable Hero can be taken as soon as second level and it is designed to be taken early in a characters career. It is a skill oriented class and is designed more for knowledge and craft based characters, but lots of characters can probably benefit from this class. There are three talent tress for the class one geared towards crafts, one geared towards know ledges, and the last is a more social one for leading unions and such. The class might be better geared towards NPCs but characters can find something to gain here as well though it is not really for the tough and strong crowd. There are also a pair of NPCs written up that use the class. Both are stat blocks with some character definition but they do serve as a good example of how this class can be used. The first is a character with a couple levels of Fast Hero, Capable Hero, and Daredevil. The other character is Charismatic Hero, Capable Hero, and Bodyguard.

This is a nice and enjoyable new class that presents another good option for d20 Modern. The class is well balanced and has creative options that go beyond what the d20 Modern books allows. The book has nice production values and a few little extras like the art and the Word version of the book. Not much else to say then I like it.
