The Closed Eye, part II (DM: covaithe, Judge: garyh)

Long after it becomes clear that they’re out of harm’s way, Woe keeps running. He keeps running until he’s out of breath. Then he pushes on and keeps running until his legs burn with lactic acid. Then he pushes on and keeps running until he doesn’t feel his legs at all.

Finally, after burning through reserves he had and reserves he didn’t have, Woe slows down. He seeks out suitable shelter nearby, sets down Tander’s corpse, and collapses next to it, frantically trying to catch his breath.

“I did it again,” Woe wheezes while unstrapping his shield. “I did it again.”

Several minutes pass where Woe does nothing but lie on the ground and rest, mumble to himself while staring up at the sky, and massage his shield hand. Blood seeps out of the glove, even though he did not appear to have suffered any hand-wounds in the battle.

[sblock=Short rest]Woe spends 2 surges to fully recover… physically.[/sblock]

Kathalia is pretty much ready - she's a druid/cleric - sort of a cross between Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter (sorry!) and a psychotic werewolf.

If we can work her and Hacker in (she could be one of his groupies?) it would be fun - if not there are other adventures and that would be fun too.

Alright, bring on the mad wolf lady Nerdytenor and let's get Hacker in as well. Will be posting later today!

[sblock=recruitment]Switching up for new characters is fine if that's what you guys want. Go ahead and do it in character when you're ready, either here or in the tavern, I don't mind which. I've seen Hacker; NT can you send a pointer to --- Oh, what, never mind. You've already linked her. Reading comprehension FTW![/sblock]

Atreus continually urges Woe to stop his mad run but the psyched out warrior does not react to his requests and is forced to follow.
Upon reaching Woe’s desired resting point, Atreus seems fatigued to the point were all life seems to have flown completely out of him and only a shadow of his former self remains.
Suddenly he collapses on the ground close to Woe. He watches the warrior rant but does nothing to calm him. He starts to go over recent events in his mind; Palindrome is fallen, Tander is fallen, Woe is broken, and he is near death…the pain unbearable…

Without notice he falls asleep, completely forgetting his current state and isolates himself in his mind. Dreams of returning back to the kingdoms erupts and replaces his current dark thoughts of death. He is back along with Kalach, returning to regain their honour and with some secret knowledge gains them the means to end the corruption created by the Oni. Both he and is mentor are celebrated throughout the Kingdom as they vanquish the Oni and for their service are presented with emblems of gold and silver, bearing the mark of great honour and courage. “ This is just a dream “ the same familiar voice appears as before and Atreus opens his eyes to find something he did not expect.

In front of him is a blurry vision of Kalach standing with his arms crossed “ I did not train you to give up Atreus” and he takes a step closer ” The physical pain will try to break your mind, but you must not let it “.

Kalach interest shifts from Atreus to Woe and curiously walks towards him. “ This warrior’s spirit has been broken, watch as fear wreck havoc inside his mind “ and he moves to stand behind Woe “ Look at him “ he says as he points at Woe “ He is physically powerful but his mind is weak! Weakened by what ever demons that may hunt him. He has given in to his emmotions! But none the less, you need him if you are to succeed in your mission against this cult. What he needs is guidance Atreus, which you must give. Be carefull of what you say, since he is not like you and I
Kalach starts to circle around Woe as he continues “Proper motivation is what he needs… choose vengeance, it is a formidable reason and it will diminish his fears. Remember Atreus, not to succeed is to break the oath we once made… and you know of the consequences.”

Kalach moves away from them and just before he disappears into the thin air he turns around and speaks of things that cannot be heard, but Atreus knows well what he has said: “ Do not fail “

With a jolt through his body, Atreus is completely awake and is brought back to reality. With the strength he has left in his body, he pushes himself up from the ground to look at Woe.
“ Woe, we must not falter, we have much to accomplish “ he say’s with determination and rises to check his surroundings as he waits for a response.

[sblock=XP]The judges have authorized me to give out various bits of XP to the dead guys for things they did before death, so I might as well make it a proper XP award.

Everyone gets a share of 400 xp for completing a minor quest: killing Arnest

Tander also gets:
  • 208 xp for 2 months time played at level 2 (26 June to 26 August, which is when he died)
  • 100 xp for roleplaying through discovering his god.

Palindrome also gets:
  • 174 xp for 1 month and 21 days played at level 2 (26 June to 17 August)
  • 50 xp for consistently awesome roleplaying. I especially liked Happy the Hugging fireball.

Woe also gets:
  • 208 xp and 178 g for 2 months played at level 2 (18 June to 18 August)
  • 100 xp for roleplaying through the deaths of his comrades. Good stuff!

Atreus also gets:
  • 312 xp and 267 g for 3 months played at level 2 (1 June to 1 September)

Totals:
  • Tander: 408 xp
  • Palindrome: 324 xp
  • Woe: 408 xp and 178 gold
  • Atreus: 412 xp and 267 gold

That puts Tander and Palindrome over the line into 3rd level before their deaths, which means KenHood and nerdytenor can create replacement characters at 3rd level. Which they've already done, but this award is what allows them to.

I also note that a partial month of time xp would put Woe over the line to 3rd, but the charter says that I shouldn't award partial months except at the end of an adventure. I'm counting PC death as equivalent to "end of the adventure" for that character, which is why Palindrome and Tander get it, but Woe doesn't just yet.

Woe stops massaging his hand and takes a long look at Atreus, though it’s uncertain whether he truly recognizes the rogue.

“What? … Yes, of course, no time to rest… If we don’t act in time the isle'll only drift away, again.”

Woe passes a hand over Tander’s face to close his eyes.

“We should go back and recover Jaera’s corpse… or what’s left of it. We could sneak up on the place, rush in and snatch the remains, and then get out of there just as quickly.”

“Then we can steal one of their boats and make our way back to Bacarte, with both the bodies of Corex and Jaera.”

The warrior rises to his feet and gazes back towards the battlefield they left, revealing mixed feelings of resolve, regret, and guilt. The blood trace running out from his glove has dried up and he seems fairly fit for fight again.

If you say this, please do it in front of 7 Rabbit!
Well, I sure wouldn’t mind a fifth member of the gang – judging from our history we need all the help we can get! Watch out for unbelievably jinxed dice and by-the-skin-of-your-teeth survival!

Girl changing into beast + Woe’s mojo = Hilarity ensues. :D

Atriden, perhaps we could aim to nail a mote or two on the way? ;) Don’t forget to spend them surges, by the way!

Oh, I don't want to join - got another adventure lined up. I just wanted to be able to react to it. (The moment's passed now, though.)

EDIT: oh, and I'm about to post a call to adventure in the tavern which Hacker has an IC reason to answer, so you might want to hurry up and recruit him before it gets even messier in there.
