The Concept Is... he DOESN'T use a sword.

Back when I was a kid and used to play 1e, I'd use polearms all the time. The Spetum & Ranseur, because they could disarm opponents. And one time I had a character that used a 26' pike.

Of course, the thing is, swords are the most common weapon for a reason.

The History Channel had a show called "Conquest", and on one episode of it, it featured all sorts of medieval weapons, and the reasons behind why they were developed and their various strengths/weaknesses..

Basically, the sword is the best overall weapon, in terms of maintence, durability, effectiveness, and ease of use.

*nods* There are weapons whose use is easier to learn but they are probably more specialized while you can do a whole lot with a sword.

i like to play dwarves, so i tend toward axes and hammers myself.

i like PCat's idea of the shovel, but i'm wondering what kind of stats it would have? :D seems like a great weapon for a guy who hunts undead.

I had a camopaiogn that was basically all fighter and rogue types. One used a spear, on used hand axes, one used a big hammer, and the other used daggers. The first magical item they found was a longsword. Each refused to use it because it was not the weapon they perfered. I miss those guys.....

When in doubt, use a greataxe. ;)
(I think I did that once for an NPC who was armed with a shovel...)

Actually, one of my favorite "stock" characters to bring into RPGA Living events is a gravedigger.. a gloomy and fatalistic fighter who fights with a shovel.

Inspired by... the Mystery Men?

"God's given me a gift. I shovel well. I shovel very well. " - The Shoveler.
