Hi, over the years I have read many posts dealing with the hatred of the d&d movie. I usually keep silent, but I feel I must say something.

I LIKED THE MOVIE!!!!

I've been playing d&d since 1st edition, and i will say the movie had a definite 2nd edition feel to it, with a little bit of the new 3.0 stuff chucked in.

It's an action/adventure flick; not Lord of The Rings or Braveheart or a host of other super serious fantasy/action flicks out there.

This post is for people who enjoyed and/or liked the movie to post some things they liked about the movie. And maybe even people who didn't really like the movie can find ONE scene/point/plot hook they did enjoy. So again, please don't post anything negative.

One thing i liked about the movie: Ridley's response to Snail's death. I found it very humbling, and I wish my player's would act like that when one of the pc's die in game (usually it's the "Oh, who gets the armor and who gets his Rings?). The way Ridley interacts with Marina is very nice, and one of the strongest emotional scenes between characters in a movie i've ever scene (and in my opinion it's the best acted scene in the whole movie). It's sort of like "Yeah, I got the smacketh layed down upon me. I've had my butt whooped by da man, and I ain't gonna take it no mo!)

Please post positive, thank you!

While I generally mock this movie whenever I can, and I don't think it is a very good (or even a good, or mediocre) movie...

When I saw this a second time (the D&D movie is to date the only film I saw before openaing day, the only film I saw on a bootleg) in the theatre, I enjoyed it. I constantly added my own commentary (in my mind) to it, thinking about the film as a D&D game with relative newbies.

For example, the scene where the heroes "meld" into the crowd:
PC: We walk away inconspicuously, so that the guards don't recognize us.
DM: Really? How are going to do that?
PC: Well, we pull our cloaks deep into our faces and mingle with the crowd.
Scene!

Or when the elf and dwarf don't enter the castle where Snails dies. This is true DM fiat, having his NPCs fall back to let the players shine or die horribly (or, in this case, both). When thinking in these terms, I actually enjoyed Profions overacting, because it was the DM overacting the NPC.

:)

I liked the film from the first time I saw it in the theatre. It resonates with the kinds of entertainment I enjoy, from Hercules and Xena to the original Knight Rider, Star Trek, and Battlestar Galactica, through Krull and the Lost World series. Its a good example of a genre that simply happens not to resonate with the "Dark! Grit! Angst! Raarrr! No smiling!" crowd. Its high-minded action-adventure of a broad, epic theme. Its Dungeons & Dragons the way my group plays and enjoys it.

I like the fact that it reveals that even a talentless hack like Courtney Solomon can not only get a directing job without having ever played the game, but that he can be asked to return! If he can accomplish such feats, anyone can!

Absolutely no negatives!

I think the movie is entertaining, and I'm glad they're giving it another shake. And even though it's a foregone conclusion the sequel will be no theatrical masterpiece, I'm positive a different director is a step in the right direction.

Man, that was harder than I thought it would be. :)

The sequel is being directed by someone else. Gerry Lively?

I liked the deleted scenes on the dvd that adds all the necessary scenes for all the major plot points in the movie.

I did like the overall story he was trying to tell. War against the wizards, the wizards being oppressive (in theory at least, it just didn't come out in execution), some thieves trying to steal something from a wizards tower and getting caught, and I did like the fight between the dragons at the end.
