The Day After Tomorrow (Spoilers)

Howdy ooooh...

I'm probably gonna go see it tomorrow ;), so I won't probably come back to this thread until I did. So I'm basically just starting the conversation to join it later.

That said... anyone saw it ? I know I thought Independence Day (made from the same producer) was a huge pile of garbage, and it felt like it was totally funded by the american government.

I know that TDAT also mostly happens in the US, but I was hoping that it was a tad less patriotic and doesn't just glances over the fact that, yeah, the rest of the world is also going down.

I'm not looking for a big plot filled story: disaster flicks are just mindless entertainment, and that's just fine by me.

So, if you've seen it, what did you think ?

Its directed by Roland Emmerich. I read that there's a scene where someone is attacked by CGI wolves (because as we all know wolves exist only in fantasy and cannot be depicted in any other way, like, I don't know, actually photographing some trained wolves). And in a disaster flick where millions die, apparently a homeless man and his dog survive.

Roland Emmerich.
Pointless CGI.
The dog lives.

No way I'm seeing it.

Eh, my daughter and I just saw it with friends and we enjoyed it. She asked if it could really happen (she's 12) and once she was reassured that it wasn't any sort of imminent threat, she had fun. After the movie I spent a little time explaining the bad science parts and she said it was much better than she thought it would be.

They weren't too gratuitous with the violence and blood. The black guy actually survives (I didn't expect him to). It wasn't bad. If I didn't have a friend who's really into disaster movies, I probably would have waited for it to make it to the discount theatre, but it was definitely OK.

[But then again, I even enjoyed Hidalgo...]

Just saw it, and well, it had some fun moments, but on the whole it took my suspensionn of disbelief and body checked it forcefully off a cliff without a safety harness.

On the plus side (at least for Trainz) it was filmed in Montreal, shows in a couple of scenes.

Definately not the case. If anything, its the opposite. Many here in the US have suggested that a movie based on impossible exaggerations and bad science that sorta relates to the real and serious issue of gloabal warming being timed right before an election is an act of political propoganda, in this case against the current government.

I thought it was a great disater/popcorn movie. Sure the science was a "bit" off, but it was interesting. They stayed true to thier own physics, and it LOOKED cool. Besides, I saw it with my girlfriend from Britain and she loved the parts with the guys in Scotland(especially the one who kept bringing up football)

Nope, not a good movie to watch if you want deep plot and such. But its a good movie for entertainment. Some movies don't NEED the kind of series attention we on ENWorld give them. :)

I enjoyed it.
Then again, I went into it hoping for a good passtime... it met it just fine! I didn't even mind the "bad" science so much... at least they TRIED to explain what was going on in the movie :) I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable, with some great effects.

About the only thing I did mind was the CG wolves. And not because they were CG, but b/c they were the "Bad Guys". Why are wolves alway portrayed as evil? Guess that's a rant for another time...

I went and saw it a few hours ago. Now, I'm not the type of guy who concentrates on the bad aspects of a movie. I enjoyed Independence Day, and was able to ignore things like F/A-18s being the only type of fighter used by all military branches and a computer virus bringing down an alien invasion.

The Day After Tomorrow was bad. Laughably so. It's the type of movie that I'd like to see on Mystery Science Theater 3000. There were some moments in the movie that almost made me burst out laughing, such as the CGI wolves that suddenly show up at the most inconvienient time for the heroes, the people running from the cold air (reminds me of all those action movies where people run from explosions), the heavy-handed environmentalist messages, and the extremely far-fetched science in the movie (ice ages are slow, gradual processes, they don't happen over the course of two weeks).

Yeah, and what's up with all those James Bond movies? Every single James Bond movie boils down to some british guy saving the world. I swear, Bond movies totally must be funded by the British government.

(Where for art thou, rolleyes smilie?)

And thus was born the Lupine Political Action Committee. Wolves as bad guys? Maybe because they're A) Predatory animals, and so one of their primary instincts is to hunt and kill prey, and B) Animals, and as such, have no capacity for distinguishing moral actions. How many stories of wolves saving babies from ditches have you heard? At best, whenever a wolf is around it's just passing through. At worst, it's looking for a snack. What're you hoping, for? Heroic wolves?

Only "almost"? :D

Made me think of the same thing, in fact I wonder if that's how they pitched it.

the heavy-handed environmentalist messages,

You're not kidding here. I'm stongly pro-environemental messages and even I felt it was heavy handed.
