The Day The Earth Stood Still

Speaking as a lifelong science fiction fan, the combination of trite story, wooden acting, and copious special effects frequently proves to be an irresistible combination.... (I kinda want to see it).

Well, when you put it that way . . . :D

You know.... I seriously want to see a movie where this trope is reversed. A movie where humans travel to another Star System and get all preachy about [ISSUE X] only to discover that there is no redeeming quality in the race we want to obliterate. THEN when we try to nuke their planet, they end up fending us off (since *TWIST* they were an ancient space faring civilization) before deciding to go exterminate humanity because proselytism was outlawed in on their planet eons ago.

Not the same, but the Futurama episode spoofing Starship Troopers had us going to their homeworld. "Wait, you mean we're the invading aliens?"

It also featured "these balls are making me testy!"

All in all, much better than a lot of movies. :)

My friend and I kind of agreed that Keanu's " wooden " acting was rather well fitted to the role he was playing, however. I mean, we are talking about an alien here...

What, aliens aren't supposed to have personalities? Did you see the original? Or at least K-Pax? :)

I just wanted to see a movie or read a book where the humans are the space-faring, conquering species that kills innocent alliens. While at the same time, the humans life in a peaceful and utopian society (when they are not waging wars on aliens). No conflict, people being able to understand their emotions and respecting each other. ;)

But your plot works too, except the aliens shouldn't be ancient space-faring species, but instead just like the humans in ID 4 - and they probably kill us all by hacking our Windows 2515 Operating Systems. ;)

Forever War. Kinda.

And that movie is Starship Troopers!
Not to get serious and picky or anything, but in that movie the aliens attacked first, wiping out Buenos Aires. Then when the humans counterattacked they initially got their asses handed to them. And despite the smiles and boosterism at the end, the movie concluded with one victorious battle, not with humans as "conquerors" and certainly not with aliens as "innocents".

See, this is what happens when one makes the irony too subtle. People miss it...

Some say the bugs were provoked by human attempts to colonize within the AQZ, that a "live and let live" policy is preferable to war with the bugs...

Yeah, well, I'm from Buenos Aires, and I say kill'em all !
Now, please don't make me explain it; That would probably violate the no politics/religion rule on this board.

Not far from Ender's Game in some respects. Particularly the kids being normally vicious kids . . . not too "respecting each other" there. But school is school no matter what society.
