Well worth your time: Episode #49 – Was There a Real Robin Hood? (Part I) – Our Fake History
Joyless? With Friar Tuck gleefully confronting Folcanet with "Welcome to Hell"?!? I think not.Robin Hood (1991, Patrick Bergin): A good effort but almost entirely joyless and pointless.
Maybe I should rewatch it, but I was quite unentertained when I saw it. Sorry.Joyless? With Friar Tuck gleefully confronting Folcanet with "Welcome to Hell"?!? I think not.
I've never seen the Disney cartoon, but I watched that clip. I didn't realise it was so Jungle Book!
I'm a huge fan of the Disney movie (see my avatar), and it was a bit horrifying how much worse my wife's 23G Grandfather was than the animated lion led me to believe (for example the fate of Maud de Braose and her son).
Yup, it's classic golden age Disney with the Milt Kahl head swaggle in full evidence. And of course (as noted above) the voice of Phil "Baloo" Harris as Little John.I've never seen the Disney cartoon, but I watched that clip. I didn't realise it was so Jungle Book!

My familiarity with Disney cartoons is... limited. I had no idea this one was a musical like Jungle Book (probably the only other cartoon of that type I've seen).Yup, it's classic golden age Disney with the Milt Kahl head swaggle in full evidence. And of course (as noted above) the voice of Phil "Baloo" Harris as Little John.
Harris also voiced Thomas O'Malley in The Aristocats, another Disney cartoon classic from the year before, and there are quite a few overlaps with Robin Hood from the voice cast: Monica Evans (Marian), Carole Shelley (Lady Cluck), Paul Buttram (the Sheriff), and George Lindsey (Trigger, one of the vulture guards) among others. And Peter Ustinov (King John) and Terry-Thomas (Sir Hiss) are pretty great too.
Yes, that was just chef's kiss for characterisation. Richard was no slouch when it came to being a terrible king.Big points to Robin of Sherwood (1984) for portraying King Richard (played by John Rhys Davies) as a total bastard.
