The Economics of Magic Items (RE: Naked Adventurers)

ooo! Gnoll Vampire! I'm gonna USE that! :D

Seriously, though. Maybe I should've elaborated on my post by saying I don't like the idea of readily available enchanting or the buying/selling of magic items in general.

So the group then just finds a better weapon in dungeon. The result is the same: the special item stops getting used. If a character is going to use his father's sword, then the item needs to get upgraded.

I can also imagine trade between adventurers as being somewhat popular. Like baseball cards or something. "Sure, I'll trade you the keen rapier that I don't use, but I want your Boots of Speed." "Ditch my boots? No way. How about you take this ring of protection instead?"

Hammerhead said, "How many permanent magical items get destroyed in your game? Adventurers probably make more permanent items than they ruin on their adventures. "

I play a character with Improved Sunder...that takes out quite a bit of magic weapons and is excellent in keeping the power levels down to reasonable.

If you want magic items to be unique you need to encourage PCs to upgrade them. Otherwise it is just This Year's +n Sword and I am sure I will loot a better one off a fallen enemy eventually. How is that an improvement?

attended items

Not if you actually use the rules as written. Attended objects only take damage if the wielder rolls a 1 on his save, and even then it's only one item.

Care to try again?

sure, i'll keep trying....

per PHB pg 136...

"An item attended by a character (being grasped, touched, or worn) receives a saving throw just as if the character herself were making the saving throw."

If you have any other rules regarding attended item saves, please let us know where they are.

Sorry, Joe, but Vaxalon is correct. The passage you specified basically only applies if said attended object is under direct attack from a weapon/spell/effect.

DM Roland -"Ok guys, for the mages action, he tosses another fireball. I'm gonna go watch TV, come get me after everyone has made their 30 or so saves. Remember, BOOTS and BOOT LACES save seperatly! Hurry it up this time and maybe we'll get to 2nd round tonite."

I'd say, save for your magic only. that is of course if you are looking for a way to scale your magic in your campaign. i dont make my players make saves most of the times, but sometimes i do. particularly against acids.

i also destroy almost all magic items an NPC has on them if the players fireball, flamestrike, lightning bolt etc... a lot.... Almost everything that wasn't metal is gone, and the smaller metal items are gone too.

If you dont like the mechanics, don't do them. Also im serious about posting where the "only on a 1 save" rule is. I've looked and i cant find it. Wouldn't be the first time ive missed somthing, but i'd like to know where it is.

Heh, now all my magic is brittle as a butterfly's wings but my cracked leather boots can resist anything. Awesome! Why bother with Walls of Force? A mundane Wall of Paper can hold back anything!
