D&D 5E The Elementalists (FULL)

BTW, Mr. Ranger, don't think I didn't see you choose Elementals as your favored enemy. Metagamer! Let's change it to Earth Elementals, because of your backstory. Plus the fact that you have no idea whether we're actually going to be fighting elementals. Just saying!

LOL SOLD!

I would have been happy narrowing down as far as Gargoyles. I was trying to get it up and picked the closest thing to Gargoyles on the list in the PHB. It was a toss up between going that rout and picking "Beasts" given that he fancied himself a great hunter before the conflicts with the Gargoyles started.

I do need to ask though, I can't find anything that says how far an Aarocokra can see?

Must be blind lol.

After reading the rules, there is no "low light vision" in 5e, so we're taking that away altogether for Avariel.

Hey tglassy!

Darkvision is a racial trait for elves (not part of the sub-races' benefits). If you look at the Tiefling, the flying Tiefling keeps its darkvision, so could it be the same for the Avariel? Perhaps reducing some the the elven weapon training (part of the sub-races' perks)?
The way I see it, the Racial benefits shouldn't change, only the subrace's. if you take the dark elf for example, they get superior darkvision, sunlight sensitivity, drow magic and drow weapon training. The flying tiefling only loses its innate magical abilities (infernal legacy) for wings.

Thanks for considering this!

If you don't think it's ok, would it be ok to consider a winged feral Thiefling (+2 Dex, instead of cha)?

Cheers,

SG

Teiflings get:
fire reseistance,
dark vision
magic or wings.

Elves get:
Free proficiency in Perception
dark vision
Fey ancestry
Trance
Free weapon proficiencies
and then either:
A free cantrip and free language
Fleet of feet and mask of wild
or drown magic. (Drow's better dark vision is offset by sunlight sensitivit)

Teifling wings give a 30 ft flight speed. I was going to give you a 50 ft flight speed, which is on par with Aarokocra. Which, by the way, only get flight and talons.

I think giving up dark vision is reasonable for the added benefit of all the other elf stuff and flight. Plus it makes sense. The only nighttime birds are owls. I would assume Avatiel do their flying during the day.

I would be willing to trade weapon profs for a far seeing ability, as if you were wearing the Eyes of the Eagle. Or you could choose to take the Goggles of Night as your magic item. And if that makes you want to switch to Teifling, that's up to you.

You are right, I missed the different flight speed, and your analogy got to me: I'm sure Avariel would mostly fly during the day.
Also, I simply love the idea of trading weapon proficiencies for an ability equal to wearing eyes of the eagle. It fits a high flying race rather nicely and makes a lot of sense (and makes the loss of darkvision easier to swallow ;-). The loss of bows hurts a bit, but hey, I'll be playing a monk, not an archer.
Cool, I'll update my character.
Thanks and cheers,

SG

On that note, Aarakocra should have that ability as well, and since they seem to get the shaft when it comes to racial abilities, I'm going to give that to them as well. So Aarakocra can see as if wearing the Eyes of The Eagle.

FYI, I'm assuming that a clearance of 5ft on each side of the character is required for flight to be possible, so no flying in tight tunnels ;-)
Fair enough?
