The end of all edition wars?

I'm onboard.

I, Wisdom Penalty, who have suffered the scorn and scars of the Edition War, mostly due to my lack of wisdom, do hereby relinquish my sword. I shall return to farming in the manner of the great Cicero.

Four bans will do that to a guy.

Even a fat, dumb guy.

Rel...do you hear me? *shakes fist* I shall never give you the reason to make an Opportunity Action [Ban] on me again!

Until 5th Edition, that is.

Wow - four bans, eh? I guess that's an appropriate number considering the edition you prefer.

Times change, David. Times change.

I bet you'd be surprised to know which edition I prefer. ;)

But in the spirit of this thread and general EN World harmony, I shall cease and desist such blathering until such time as they are required (e.g., when I'm really bored).

I very recently sold every physical D&D rule book that I own because of the incessant sniping going on over which edition of said game is superior to all others. I have started ordering books for other games and game systems whose player bases aren't so deeply and bitterly divided over something as petty as edition preference.

You are seriously telling me that you have quit D&D because some random people on messageboards are still arguing over which edition is better? Doesn't that seem a bit extreme? Wouldn't it be better to just not peruse the "edition war" threads on the messageboards?

This kinda reminds me of a great stand-up comedy bit from
the late Richard Jeni. He was talking about how the people in Jaws IV
were over-reacting to the shark problem. They lived in NYC and had
shark issues, so they fled............to the Bahamas.

" Leave town? Isn't that a little severe? Wouldn't an apartment
building protect you from the average fish?"

So they go to the Bahamas to escape a SHARK.

Quitting D&D= leave town.
Going to the Bahamas= hanging out on EN World after quitting D&D.

I have only ever seen this with regard to D&D. Those who opposed new editions of White Wolf games seemed to spring up only from players of the then current edition. Likewise, opponents to new editions of Shadowrun, HERO, etc seemed to come only from the fanbase of the edition then slated for discontinuation.

This business of people who are playing an edition of a game that was discontinued more than two decades ago rallying against the most recent edition of the same game? An edition that they have absolutely no stake in? IME, that seems unique to D&D.

Traveller. It wasn't just MegaTraveller players complaining about TNE, but also Classic players. Same with T4, GURPS, and d20 Traveller.
I haven't frequented Traveller boards in a while so I'm not sure what the buzz about Mongoose Traveller is from the CT holdouts.

Of course, Traveller is one of the few games that has gone through more radical changes than D&D, so one expects it to be a bit different from other games like CoC.

I think two more factor to be considered with respect to major changes and fan outcry: how soon the changes are made after the previous edition and how widespread the game is.
Villain and Vigilantes went through substantial changes from 1e to 2e, but was in its infancy when it happened. It gained most of its popularity after the edition change. There was little outcry. But in D&D's case, particularly with 3e and 4e, it has been 8-10 years after introduction of the previous edition and, in both cases, there were substantial changes. Hence, more outcry.

This question has already been answered in Post #51 (by all means, read it). When the majority of D&D-related posts seem to be edition wars, it's easier to ignore them all than trying to separate the few grains of wheat from the mountain of chaff.
