The end of an era

Well, I'm moving far away next week, and we just finished up the last session of my campaign on the east coast. It was an experiment with giving the PCs a feat each level, and reducing the wealth by half to try and balance it out. The campaign was based on the Return to White Plume Mountain (2nd edition), which was one of the first adventures I ever bought, but this is the first time I've had a chance to run it.

This campaign has given me lots of new stories, mostly because my players proved that they were bold enough to try anything. They looted everything that wasn't nailed down, and even spent an hour smashing a statue out of the boulder it was carved from. They spent most of the rest of the campaign trying to discern what bizzare stone it was made of. They jumped through random portals, rang inexplicable gongs, tortured conquered mephits, drank unknown magical liquids from suspect basins, and d-doored into the unknown (and were subsequently shunted) to try and follow fleeing villains. They conquered foes well above their level, but were cocky enough to be captured by wizards on several occasions. They found a deck of cards, identified it as an artifact, and had the cojones to draw every last card from the deck. They had the faith to use a djinni's wish by saying "Get us out of this mess!" after probably an hour of real life carefully discussing how best to use it before that particular battle.

In short, I'm sure that I came dangerously close to an aneurysm in every session, but I'm equally sure that I will remember the campaign fondly for the rest of my gaming years. Anyone else care to share their stories?

I've always wanted to run Return to White Plume Mountain. If I do, I'll convert it to 3.5 and have the adventurers be the grandchildren of the original heroes. As they get to the front door i'll flash back, hand out 1e character sheets of their parents, and run the original in 1e. then ill return to the present and run the "Return to"!

I always thought that'd be really fun. Haven't had time yet, though.

Brilliant idea.
 

Its nice to see someone else enjoy this truly awesome adventure, which IMO surpassed the original (which I have a lot of love for). Our party drew a ton of cards as well. One character drew the "age 1 minute before your death" card, then the "turn into a vampire" card. Another got reduced to an ogre child, but since it was a mostly humerous campaign, the character was improved in everyone's opinion. Even Airface, the pet air elemental drew a card, and got the "avoid any situation" which everyone dubbed the Omega 13 after Galaxy Quest.

The conclusion with baby Keraptis and Nix and Nox was great, and made campaign long worthy adversaries for my PC's. I'd strongly urge anyone to snag this... its a great module.
