The Enterprise through the ages

Excelsior, NX, sovereign are some of my favourites. Spent a lot of time watching Those New Guys in their galaxy class and love chonky that ship is. Not sure I really have a favourite enterprise though.

If talking about just star trek starships, I do like the warp delta class. Makes me think of a starfleet version of a bird of prey.

I really wish that we had gotten the original Romulan/Human War, that's mentioned in TOS. Audio FTL communication only. Then again I really wish that we'd gotten the Four Years War, with the Klingons, as was laid out by FASA and was originally considered canon.

To me the Sovereign class looks by far the most dated, which is funny given it's technically the most recent. I think all the other ones fit into a sort of design language of their own, which is quite unique and specific (right from the get-go), but the Sovereign looks like a 50/50 mixture of "Federation ship" and "Generic 2000s-era futuristic spaceship". I think what it really need is a neck like all the others. It's too big to not have one and it pushes it towards the generic.

Personally I like all of them except that. I do think the NX didn't have enough of the design language of the Constitution class - they couldn't resist the urge to give it a little too much 2000s-era slickness, but it's still a good design overall, and like, 90% of what it should be (and yeah as @Morrus says it looks a lot like the excellent Akira class).

Galaxy-class, Ambassador-class and Constitution Refit would be my personal favourites though!

I think my favorite of the Enterprise classes is the Enterprise-E. It looks like I'm the minority in this thread.

My least favorite is probably the NX. It's a ripoff (though, the retcon would be the Akira class is the one to copy it) of the Akira Class (they made the NX much smaller, and the Nacelles below instead of above).

For Star Trek Federation ships in general, I have a particular love for the Constellation Class and the Sabre Class (you start SFC 3 with one of these if you play Federation).

I don't actually know the timeline between STIV and VI but yeah it doesn't feel like long.
It wasn't, but the Constitution class was close to the end of its service by the time the A was commissioned anyway (or at last by the time it was commissioned as the Enterprise). The Excelsior class was ready to take over by then and, judging by how many of them show up all over TNG, was very popular and lasted a good long time.

I personally really prefer the later sleeker designs. It's not about aerodynamics, it's about looking cool. Like those cars from the 30s and 40s that had cool sculpting but were aerodynamically naughty word. When any engineer puts so much work into a design, they want it to both look good and function well, and that's what the later designs hit for me. I'm not the biggest lore nerd, but as far as remember the only design limitations on starfleet designs were that the nacelles put out a lot of radiation and needed to have some distance from ocupied sections, and it had to fit inside a warp bubble ( both of these explainations being retcons that came well after the design of the original Enterprise was finished ). I also like that as the ships developed that the ratio of the engineering section to general purpose section decreased. Making it feel like the engines were getting progressively better power ratios.

My favorites in order are;

Enterprise D - I love how it can look both imposing, powerful, and friendly all at the same time. I also love the huge saucer section, it really shows that the general purpose science and diplomatic parts of the ship's function were prioritized.

Constitution Refit - It has that original iconic silhouette, but with some much needed extra details.

Enterprise E - Really cool sleek design. It's the most aggressive looking so far, though that makes sense in a post Dominion War Starfleet. I just prefer the more welcoming designs.

Excelsior - It's got the most unique look of the lot, that blends the sleek and mechanical look of past ships well.

Constitution - Objectively a bit bland of a design, but one that is massively iconic.

NX - It does a good job of looking like a prototype Starfleet design, I like it but don't love it.

Enterprise C - Obviously made just to look like an intermediate design between the Excelsior and D. It's too basic of a blend between the two that doesn't have anything unique to it.
Basically, there's a Tom Paris on every Starfleet design team.

Maybe it is still in service as of Picard.
They dropped a line about it on Picard, where Geordi said that of course they couldn't use the E, and Worf replied with, "That was NOT my fault!". Of course it couldn't still be in service anyway, since the Enterprise F (and by the end the G) were in service. One Enterprise at a time!

Ah good point. I'd forgotten about that!

I found this article where Terry Matalas says they wanted to keep the fate of Enterprise E a mystery so fans could have fun speculating about it: Terry Matalas On Why Janeway And Harry Kim Weren’t In ‘Star Trek: Picard’ And The Fate Of The Enterprise-E

“We had ideas, but in the moment where they’re asking, ‘What about the Enterprise-E?’ it would not have been good for someone to be like, ‘Well, the Battle of duh, duh, duh.’ You are looking at the Enterprise-D! You couldn’t do it and you wouldn’t do it justice, whatever it is. You could say it is in storage or we are repainting it. You could, but I thought, but I thought it was way funnier if they all turned to Worf and he’s like, “It wasn’t my fault.” So everyone is going, “What the hell happened?” That’s way more fun. Somebody can tell that story some day about what happened with Worf and the Enterprise-E but it’s more fun to imagine yourself all the possibilities. Is it lost in an interdimensional rift and it’s still out there somewhere? Was it an accidental self destruct? Who knows? The question is almost better than the answer.”
