Re: Dean

This guy did an excellent summary of their current situation. Among other things, he notes the Dimebag estate’s case is still active, but going slooowly.

Id not heard that the Abbotts estate was suing Dean as well. I only knew of the lawsuit with the graphic artist, so I wrongly assumed that was what you were referring to, I stand corrected. It would seem Deans fate is sealed regardless.

I was discussing Dean’s fate in Ultimate-Guitar, and opined that if it DOES go under, I hope Zelinsky is able to buy his IP back from them. At least the Cadillac. I’d love to see what he’d do with those at DZPL.

I went into my guitar room yesterday to do some tinkering, string changes, etc. and realized I literally have no room left to move around in there, so I took a nap. A better man would have said "I should re-arrange things to create more room, I have too many guitars", instead, being the lesser man that I am I said to myself, "I'll just add a lower tier of String Swings, I don't have enough guitars". Has any guitar player ever said, "I have too many guitars, amps, pedals and accessories"? I don't think so...

Anyone interested these are great, screw a 2 x 4 to wall studs and space these 6-12 inches apart and you're all set, just measure twice and cut once and account for height. Make sure to position the string swing low enough from the ceiling that you don't hit the head stock on the ceiling when you go to put them back. Especially with the 17-degree angle on a Les Paul headstock that are known to break if you look at them the wrong way. These hangers are sturdy too, you just have to tighten the swing angle screw every now and again. You'd be surprised how much street road traffic vibration from outside can loosen these types of things. I say this as a word of caution as 95 out of 100 times i.e. I've gone to put a guitar on the wall and its kind of a rote action, had no problems, but more than a few times when going to put a guitar back on the wall the hanger is loose and moves and if you're not careful it is ending up dropping on the floor. It's never come to that, and I fully endorse and trust these but just a warning based on my XP. Hercules also makes great products too if you're not a fan of wall hanging.

Sorry if I just cast Bardic Sleep on everyone but just popped in my head and thought it was relevant...to whom I don't know

DId I miss something in that video, is Zelinsky actually making a play to get his IP back? He's gotta be pretty old by now. Is Karl Sandoval still alive and working? I looked online and didn't see a Wikipedia page. He made Randy Rhoads' Polka Dot guitar and think he went on to start Jackson/Charvel Guitars.

This is from Rochester NY 1981

I feel like I just stepped in the Tardis watching that video. So much spandex and feathered mullets. It looks like his grandmother embroidered the sequined "OZZY" shirt :ROFLMAO:. But that solo is amazing, spot on, I don't think he flubbed one note. I'm going on the record as saying RR is a better composer than EVH. Rhoads just added this classical/medieval element that Eddie didn't have.

No, you didn’t miss anything. There’s no mention of Zelinsky trying to get his IP back.

But I can’t help but think that- being the industry vet he is- he thinks in those terms. IMHO, it’s no coincidence that his second stint with Dean saw Cadillacs featuring majorly in the Time Capsule production runs, as well as getting a more affordable version called the “1980s” that were specced out similar to the way he originally built them. And with good QC.

As for whether he’s still in the workshop? I have no info. But I know a lot of luthiers act like keeping their hands in the game is as important as breathing or eating. Maybe they’re not as fast or whatever, but they keep building and modifying guitars until they can’t.

Starting at the 2:32 mark doesn't it look like Terry Kaths guitar neck is Front Bowed? Probably the angle. Great solo. Terry Kath, Chicago, Live at Tanglewood 1970.

Loyalty, dedication and job security are a thing of the past so the minute they slow down they get the axe. No pun intended. So they are probably left with making a few custom high end (well deserved) guitars. I'd imagine if these master luthiers make 1 guitar every 2 months, that's 6 a year at say $5K if not more, thats $30K/year plus whatever social security/pension they get, not to mention the random custom shop order, I'd reckon they do alright. Just look at StewMac, they have Stewart Macdonald and Dan Erlewine, two master luthiers correct? It'll be a shame when they are gone but I'm sure they have had apprentices to keep their legacy intact.

Well, the pay scale is probably a tad different if it’s YOUR name on the letterhead.
