The ENWorld Shotgun Ragtime Band

Friday, and the holidays are hurtling towards us faster than Keef Richards to a gram of mexican horse. So what better occupation than envisioning the worlds greatest musical ensemble, The ENWorld Shotgun Ragtime Band? So now auditioning: Tell us what you play, instrument and style. Looking for everything from blippy electronica to good ol' guitar to the odd wandering crumhorn player.

I'll start. I play mainly guitar, with a bit of mandolin, and a smattering of piano. Better rhythm player than lead. When I do play lead it's more Syd Barrett than Eric Clapton. I also do a lot of fingerstyle stuff - old country blues mostly. When first learning I played a lot of speed metal and thrash, but grew out of it. Still remember a lot, but my chops are probably not up to snuff for that style.

Next? :)

I used to play a mean Baritone horn. Bet you never heard Sabbath's Iron Man played on a big brass instrument before, did you?

Well, you're in if only so that we can give props to the ever important Deathtongue influence!

Electric bass is my main instrument but I play some other things too (sax, piano, little drums and guitar). I've played in a few bands in college and since. I have a minor in music too (in addition to an engineering degree). I contemplated playing full-time but I have a hard time with not knowing where my next paycheck will come from. Just not my personality.

Lately, I've been listening mostly to heavier stuff but I've played all styles in the past. I was in a funk/R&B group in college and had a blast. My earlier influences were Stevie Wonder, James Brown, P-Funk, Motown, etc. I've also studied jazz (sax and bass), classical piano, latin, reggae, music theory, etc. I've worked as an engineer and now tech writer but I've always said I'm a better musician than engineer. Oh well.

Had I the money when younger, drums. I've been interested in all things "drum" my whole life. Need to invest in a set and try taking it up again. :\

Trumbet, French Horn, Baritone, Trombone, and Tuba. Tuba is my strongest and I cover ed a lot of Jazz and symphonies plus the mandatory marches. Ah, those were good times, wish I was still in a band.

I played French Horn back way back in both classical and jazz ensembles - for jazz I mostly covered Trombone 2 on horn (I used to be able to sight transpose! Aghhhh, where has the time gone!), but sometimes the arrangement would have a horn in F part. I also do some mallett percussion and other auxillary percussion stuff, but I may be even farther removed from those skills than my Horn playing.

The best thing I can contribute is voice - I used to do all kinds of musical theatre, I directed a jazz a capella group last year (and I can improv the heck out of stuff while singing - something I was never comfortable with on horn), and I'm not too bad as a choral-style tenor.

It looks like we have three pieces of a brass quintet between Crothian, Cthulhu's librarian, and myself - though I wouldn't want anyone to suffer my horn playing 'til I practice a bit. Sign me up for vocals.
