The ENWorldian work ethic.

I'm an engineer.

A lot of my time is spent in design work and simulation. While simulation is going on, I can either talk to my wonderfully social engineer friends... or surf on over here and say hello.

I think you can guess which one I generally choose.

I work at a university library. Sometimes its very busy, and I can only swing by ENWorld at lunch. Other times its very slow (like this past month) and I can spend more time each day reading & posting.

Chalk up another I.T. over here.

ENWorld is fun for diversions from spooling print jobs, waiting for return tech support calls, waiting for people to tell me if something worked or not, and flipping between message boards and designing network charts and writing up notes. When things are running smoothest, I am at my slowest.

Of course, there are times like today where this is the first time I've sat down in 4 hours, and work is brisk. But it has been noted that the majority of ENWorlders are posting from work, be it lunch break or down-time.

I'm a grad student at the moment; I'm either "always at work" or "never at work" depending upon how you look at it, but very seldom far from my computer.

I'll spend much less time here in another six months when I return to the real world.

I've noticed lately a lot more of those "Great discussion peoples! It was getting a bit dull here at work." lines being present in threads. Are these people just sitting at their desks surfing the net while on the clock, or are they on their lunch break? Just curious.

Soon you, too, young Jedi will be part of the work force in the USA and will also be finding ways to make the day go quickly...

I work at home. That means I work the same 50+ hours everyone else does, but it doesn't all have to be between 8am and 6pm.

Previously I worked as a Programmer, and I spent a good 7 hours a day browsing (most of my work was done real quick). Since they canned our whole department I'm my own boss, so I use my down time to browse (only about 3 hours a day).

I work in the entertainment industry, and though I shouldn't be surfing the net, I also have to work long hours for little pay... So I think it evens out in the end.

In a musical instruments store, I do leasing, insurance replacement, and answer e-mails. As long as my work is done, and well I might add, I do not have to answer to nobody.

And there is a lot of downtime these months. So....

Mark, we need to see that other hand. Right now.

At my old IT job (left two days ago), I had days of absolutely nothing to do, sprinkled evenly with days I was out-of-my-mind busy. So the down times were usually spent browsing ENworld, since I had a high-walled cubicle and I saw my boss maybe once per week. Everyone else was afraid to enter my laboratory of fear and chaos...

We'll see what the situation at the new job is like.
