The Fastest Hunk-O'-Junk in the Galaxy!

1) Ryo-oh-ki, from Tenchi Muyo!
2) Also Ryo-oh-ki.
3) The massive wooden Treeships of Jurai, from, you guessed it Tenchi Muyo!

What can I say, I'm a fanboy. :D

4)Probably the Red Dwarf, for the reasons Tallarn mentioned.

5)There's too many. But probably some type of Flying Saucer.

I loved the way the White star's from B5 looked/ moved. I also liked the comand fighter from comet empire season on Yamato/ star blazers. For size factor, you have to go with the super star destroyer from Empire and Jedi.

Hiya Mark mate! :)

(I'll toss my ideas in later in the thread so it doesn't influence the early answers...) :)

1. Star Destroyer (the pass over shot in the opening sequence of Star Wars is a seminal moment).

2. Probably the Millenium Falcon since it could twist and turn into those narrow asteroid gorges; but for me the coolest is the Eclipse Class Super Star Destroyer from Dark Empire - that is such an awesomely imposing ship design.

3. Possibly the Liberator from Blakes Seven* or the Tardis from Doctor Who. You also have to give kudos to both the Tie Fighter and and Shadow Vessels - both of which made great use of sound effects as well as great design.

*The design of which was "borrowed" for B5s Crusade series flagship the Excalibur.

4. The Space Shuttle in the opening credits of Enterprise looks real enough to me. :p

Other than that perhaps Earth Force Destroyers or Fighters from B5 or their counterparts from Space Above & Beyond.

5. Star Trek has a lot of poorly designed ships (not from an aesthetic point of view; the Enterprise incarnations 'look' great) from a functional standpoint. The Scimitar ship in Nemesis was hilarious, few seem to have much of a clue how to design a decent warship in the 24th-century.

1. Star Destroyer from Star Wars

2. I'll have to go with the Millenium Falcon

3. The System Lord ships of Stargate SG-1

4. X-303 from Stargate SG-1. Its was made here on Earth with borrowed technology from verybody.

5. Jupiter 2 from the Lost in Space TV show

1. B5 has tons of things... hard to choose, as they were well thought out.

2. Robotech series had a bunch of cool ones, but for a single vote I gotta go with the Falcon too. Granted it's not the ride you go to get your favorite female in, but wow they could do anything with it.

3. Most of the stuff from Robotech is really good to me, and gets my imagination flowing.

4. 2001.

5. Goofy ships in the Matrix.

1. the Starfuries from B5

2. The Andromanda ascendent (sp?)

3. the Manbari (sp?) Battle Cruisers, the White Stars, and the Shadow ships from B5 all tie for this place

4. the Earth Force Ships, esp the Starfury design

5. Fireball XL5.......

I think Michael Ironsides played a villain, who had his arm cut off, then replaced with an alien arm. The other aliens then used some sort of powers to make his alien arm try and kill himself.

John Saxon. Ironside was the villain in Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone.

And I have both on tape. :)

For category #5, I say it's the "pie tin lit on fire" spaceship from Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Now, I don't know if Ed Wood used an actual pie tin, but it really looks like two pie tins or paper plates attached to each other(remember making a "tambourine" like this in first grade or so?), doused in gasoline, lit on fire, and tossed (literally!) in front of the camera.

That's just an urban legend. A magazine interviewed the guy who actually did the "effects" work on that film. The real story is that Wood went into a toy store and bought a bunch of UFO models and used them.

Getting back on topic:

1.) What's the BEST spaceship design you've seen in any Sci-Fi offering?

Tough one. Part of me wants to go with Earth VS The Flying Saucers. Simple and classic rotating UFOs done in stop motion by Harryhausen.

I'll have to give this one more thought...

2.) ...the Coolest?

A toss up between ST: NG's Romulan Bird Of Prey and Klingon Warbird.

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

Robotech. The classic Macross 3 form fighters. I don't remember what they're called anymore, but they were great. And what kid didn't want to fly one of those?

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

The rotating Earth ships from B5.

5.) ...the Lamest?

Space Mutiny. Did you catch it on MST3K? One of their best shows, imo. So, what makes the ship in this movie so lame? It was just stock footage of Battlestar Galactica...played in reverse. Yep, the Galatica flying backwards. Can't get any lamer that that.

1.) What's the BEST spaceship design you've seen in any Sci-Fi offering?

Super Star Destroyer from ESB. 5 miles of fun!

2.) ...the Coolest?

I'm going to break from the Star Wars rank-and-file and go with the X-Wing. I wanted one so bad when I was a kid. Heck, I still do. It goes hyperspeed, it's got four lasers, proton torpedoes, it's own R2 papoose, and it can take off after being left in a swamp for days. What's not to love.

My girlfriend begs to differ. She says the Defiant. It -was- pretty darn tough. Heavy arms and armor, fast as hell, and it had a cloaking device. Hmm, this is tougher than I first surmised...

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

The Bebop just oozed character.

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

The Nostromo from Alien. This is what I imagine interstellar travel will be like: cramped, greasy, and industrial, with human comfort an afterthought.

5.) ...the Lamest?

The Last Starfighter. It's ultimate weapon is ... it spins around real fast, shooting randomly. Sounds like a great way to induce vomiting.

1.) What's the BEST spaceship design you've seen in any Sci-Fi offering?

3 way tie - The Enterprise designs for both TOS & TNG. The Star Destroyer.

2.) ...the Coolest?

Millenium Falcon but coming in at a close second is the retrofitted Enterprise D from the last Next Gen ep "All Good Things." :D

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

Moya (a Leviathan) from Farscape and the the ships from War of the Worlds.

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

The original Farscape1 module. Either that or the Delorean time machine from Back to the Future. ;)

5.) ...the Lamest?

I seem to recall mentioning 'lame' a few times when watching This Island Earth...

That's a real tough one. No one's really made the ideal starship I've imagined in sci-fi.

So, I'll have to go with the Star Destroyers from Star Wars (any variant). Just the right blend of abilities to be impressive without being over-the-top.

2.) ...the Coolest?

Shadow Cruisers from Babylon 5. Spelljammer drow only wish they could be that cool... :D

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

Again, the Shadow Cruisers.

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

Earth Alliance Starfuries and cruisers from Babylon 5.

5.) ...the Lamest?

Those big, ping-pong shaped transports from Babylon 5 (like Earthforce One). I get the idea behind the shape but... yeow, those look silly. :)
