The fate of one 4e PHB

Havn't played it yet, but it certainly looks interesting enough to try, at least. :)

It does appear to be a bit 'video gamey', but we'll see how it actually feels in play eventually.

Everyone ha a right to their opinion, but just flipping through the book does not lead to much of an informed opinion, in my opinion (which may well be uninformed, who knows ;) )

When I first flipped through the 3.0 PHB, I was enthralled.

If I hadn't been, I may have done exactly what the OP did.

When I first opened my copy of 4E, I was a little, well, overwhelmed. It looked really different. Really, really different. As I began reading it, I felt like I was fumbling through a Spanish Physics textbook with only my two years of high school Spanish to guide me. I could recognize things, but it was so alien. However, the more I read, the more I understood where they were coming from and the more I liked it.

Wizard is in a real "damned if you do, damned if you don't" position. If they change things too much, they freak people out. If they only tweak things a little, people will complain that they feel ripped off like when 3.5 came out.

I consider myself in the later category, so I'm glad they went for big changes (I didn't buy any 3.5 books, but I do sympathize with those who did and feel like they wasted their money).

3E got me back into gaming, so I'm glad it came out when it did, but I'm enjoying what I see of 4E.

I wasn't, by any stretch of the imagination, an early adopter of 4e, but I consider myself to be a fair and rational human being, so, with employee discount days running, I bought a copy of the 4e PHB at a steep discount, brought it home and flipped through it. Less than 24 hours later, I went back to work, returned it, then drove down the street to a game store that's (sadly) in the process of going out of business and bought a copy of the Dragonlance campaign setting for 50% off.

4e isn't a terrible game, but it can't hold a candle to 3.5.

You should have used it to prop up your wobbly table instead!

If you're into 3.5 and Dragonlance, boy do we have a lot of books you can pick up from us.

Cheers,

My memories of the 3.0 PHB was a lot of hard work. Their dark brown on brown design and tiny type was a lot fo work to go through. I like 3.x, and still play is extensively, but 4E was much much easier to read.

You guys did an awesome job with Dragonlance during 3E. A few months ago, I went and ordered most of the remaining books I didn't have yet....the Key of Destiny series, and Dragons of Krynn.

Now that I've taken a look at the 4E rulebooks, and seen most of my players reject them, I'm thinking of picking up some fresh copies of the 3.5 rulebooks (mine are the original 3.0 printing), since there are some fairly discounted copies available, and running the DL series, and several others that I haven't had a chance to try.

Too bad you never had a chance to do Taladas. Kudos to the team.....I think you guys produced the best Dragonlance supplements probably in the history of the setting. I loved the original DL hardback, and the Taladas boxed set, but many of the others were lacking.

Precisely the same, here. Initially, I was extremely sceptical about 3e, but I then (i.e., after reading through a gaming friend's 3.0 PHB) went out and bought the 3.5 books (because they were just coming out - otherwise it would've been 3.0 to start with.)

I've had a good look through the 4e books, and read enough of the rules and writing besides, to know for certain that 4e isn't for me either. I'd sooner play any other edition before it. And I will never run the thing. Gods be praised no players I know will ask me to, ever.

All's well that ends well, and such. :)
