We play around a dining room table. As long as the table is large enough for whatever you need that's fine. Beyond that, just have a comfy place to sit.

The best gaming table I ever used consisted of 2 large sliding closet doors that were nailed down next to each other on wooden sawhorses in a basement game room. Plenty of room for the 7 or 8 players and the DM. It was large enough to place the large game mat down in the center of the "table", and none of our books or dice even came close to touching the mat. We even modified the circular depressed "handles" of the doors to hold pens etc. I'm trying to convince my group to rebuild the same type of setup in a new basement.

pool table with a 4x8 sheet of plywood over top, covered with plexiglass with 1" grid taped to the back. Seats around 8 comfortably.

Here's our Gaming Table:

Too small for what kind of set up?

That's nearly 170 square feet dedicated entirely to gaming (the living room - biggest room in the apartment - is only a little over 220 square feet...)
I guess I'm too used to gaming with approximately nine other people on a regular basis. We get together at my fiends place, that has one room devoted to gaming of every kind - board, card, video, pc and even arcade gaming. It is a huge room - 50' by 50'.

Yep - that's more than double the size of our (relatively spacious) two bedroom apartment...
