We really need a Con in NYC. The Eastcoast definatly needs one.
If not NYC then Boston or WashingtonDC

Hmmmm..... Now, I have never been to GenCon, and obviously, many people who do go are THERE now! But do you think this is really true? People from Atlanta aren't going to drive to Indy, are they (other than a small handful...)?

I kind of assumed the the 8 hour drive radius would really be tapping out the market....

Actually, I am closer to DragonCon than to GenCon, but I went to GenCon this year. I had to chose one or the other and opted for the latter because a large number of the publishers with which I work simply don't go to DragonCon...

The drive was not really that bad at all and it was WELL worth it - I'm going again!

You will NEVER, EVER EVER see me at a 'con in New York, at least in NYC - I have limited funds set aside for a vacation each year, and that would kill it for me if Gencon ever moved there. I do think that it might hurt Indy Gencon if there were another East Coast con of equivalent draw, however.

Indy was chosen because it is literally within a day's drive from most of the country - it's easy enough to get to from most of the east coast and the midwest. Gencon SoCal will be great, because of the fact that the west coast is a totally different region with respect to east/west travel - it's generally air travel, or no travel. I hope it does very well, and hopefully its December date will not cause problems.

IIRC, the GenCon website said that 1/2 the US population was within a day's travel of Indy, and Indy can boast by having the most interstates run through/around it.

I think Peter is trying to go for the throat right out of the gate at GenCon SoCal. The main guest of honor at this years show is going to be William Shatner. Me personally I'd rather see Captain Kirk than Sam Wise. I think GenCon has a SoCal show so they can attempt "bigger" stars than they could easily get being in Indy.
