Then why was Gygax railing against those who modify the official rules, in Dragon magazine editorial? Saying that they weren't playing AD&D and all that crap.

Actually, that's not what he was railing against. He was against those who modify the rules and called it AD&D. He wanted that called something else (I think "Variant AD&D" became the common term).

At that point Gary was pushing for tournament play. He wanted players who showed up to play at a tournament to know what to expect in the game. It was all about expectations and consistancy.

Did I just miss it?

You missed something, that's for sure.

I'm not saying OD&D is the best or anything, I'm just saying it works for me. It is simple and maliable enough that someone with my experience can mold the gamer to exactly what I want.

I'm curious. I would like to know what dialgo said too...

So I can conquer the world!

It may not be anything he said. diaglo hands out these weird pizza roll things that, after ingesting, you cannot help but love OD&D.

It was a damn good pizza roll!!

Actually, it was over breakfast at Steak and Shake.

Ah, OD&D where elves are elves and dwarves are dwarves, not dwarven clerics or elven thieves, or worse elven fighter/cleric/thief. For shame! :p

Seriously though, there's a certain appeal to it, in the sense that I would play a Rules Cyclopedia game in a split second, and the fact that dwarves and elves are classes would actually, far from hindering my decision, motivate it at least to some degree.

I think that's because of the simplicity and the archetypal aspect of it. You know that when you'll play a dwarf, you'll play Gimli. You know that playing an Elf would mean playing a magical being that doesn't suck at shooting a bow. That just fits the cliches, and sometimes cliches are excellent things to play with.

So, basicaly, you're going to bail out on your players and the current campaign and force them to play in a very limited system that is no longer being made, supported, or played by the vast majority of role-players out there.

Might be fun for a one-off. If you're serious about switching to OD&D as your main system, and I were your player, I'd be dropping out of your game ASAP. That's just... chaotic. But, then again, you've always struck me (from your posts) as a very chaotic and ad-hoc type DM, so it just might be the right thing for you and those players who don't mind.

Don't forget to report his blasphemy so he can be banned for not hailing the all-holy 3.5!

OD&D is a great game no question. I ran a long campaign using the D&D Rules Cyclopedia and there is no rapture greater than having every thing you need to run a campaign from levels 1-40 in a single hardcover book...

Yeah, the Rules Cyclopedia is a work of art:)

Well I think it's important to repeat, again, that liking a system doesn't mean that any other game system sucks. Crothian likes 3.X and has great fun with OD&D. I'm in the same category, in that I love 3.5, 1E, B/X D&D, OD&D and would play any of them on the spot. Liking or loving one of the above doesn't mean you've got to hate or belittle the others.
