The glory of OD&D

I see this all the time, and I dont get it, aside from the inherent grognard snobbery that pervades ENWorld. Having a rule on how to trip someone doesnt prevent you from creating a character with realistic motivations, it just means you can quickly resolve an action without coming up with something on the spot. Similarly, bumbling through ever changing house rules that the DM has to think up situationally each week doesnt enhance characterization.

Frankly, a rules system *should* be concerned with resolving actions and outcomes, not forcing people to act or think in a certain manner or forcing them into charicatures via feeder pellet rewards (storyteller's will recovery method). If your players are more concerned with the nifty new rules, thats a failure on them and the DM, not the system.

See? Then people counter with their own brand of snobbery. He, and I, said if you have fun playing it then play it! We are such horribly snobbish Grognards!

I just find it hilarious Crothian has gotten so much closer to playing C&C.

actually, diaglo was a perfect gentleman - he didn't hit me over the head with his hat of d02 or anything!

Diaglo was a real treat. I roomed with him and had a few meals with him and he was a lot of fun to talk with. He also had some interesting stories that I dare not repeat here, but I was laughing very hard and amazed at them.

Alright Crothian, my friend, you've sparked my curiousity.

If one were to pursue this dark path of Diaglo, exactly which products would one need to aquire? Are such books even within the reach of poor radio DJ Drew? And, at what point do I get to learn the "real spells?" I've got a real need for a good old Mind Bondage spell.

Ditto that request. I don't need print versions if there are pdfs out there, but are they out there?

Wow! We have a full-fledged revolution on our hands! Or at least a minor revolt. I'm telling you guys, 4E = OD&D. What goes around comes around.

There are pdfs out there but someone else will have to link you to them.

I know there are pdfs out there, but I don't know if they are legal. Probably not.

Keep an eye on ebay. Some copies are in great condition and sell for way too much, but let the collectors buy those. Look for more used or worn copies, as long as the pages are legible.

Crothian: when you get your game going, please post a pointer to some session logs, I'm sure several old schoolers will want to check it out. Also, if you're interested in some good OD&D rules/system discussion forums, check out:

Might put them up on Ebay sometime in the future along with some of my other older books.

Hey Rogue765, if you decide to sell that sometime, shoot me an email first, and I'll make you a good offer in cash or trade.

AFAIK, there are no legal PDFs of the original three books. However, PDFs of Chainmail and the supplements (Greyhawk; Blackmoor; Eldritch Wizardy; Gods, Demigods, & Heroes; and Swords & Spells) are all available from Paizo. Also, I believe Dave Arneson has made the Blackmoor supplement available for free, but I don't have a link handy.

It's odd that all the supplements are legally available, but the OD&D "core rules" are not. I bought a set off of ebay and paid around $40.
