The glory of OD&D

Whoops - Sorry some of you took a couple of things I said and thought I must be attacking here - my opinions of how 3.x and d20 tend to run are just that - my own opinions and preferences and I know lots of people absolutely happy with it and I think that's great - we all have different experiences with our gaming and it's absolutely cool.. I only meant to relate my experiences and note that they are those whose tastes run the other way towards rules-lite experiences, but I was hoping to make the point that I don't mean this to think "I'm right" or this is any way "better" than others. I know there are those who do take this stand and I don't like it when they do - so my apologies if some thought I was saying this.

It's all good as long as we have fun with whatever game or system we decide to use. :)

It was fun, wasn't it?

However, as much as I loved killing owlbears and collecting the severed heads of our fallen enemies "to prove that the mayor was up to no good," I can't imagine playing that sort of game as an ongoing campaign.

I'll stick w/ 3E, thanks.

An the mayor would have gotten away with it, if not for you meddling kids....

To tell the truth, my regular 1e game involves much more roleplay, less handwaving, and much more than cliches like columns in every temple. ;) That was a one-shot fast and loose con game to get things kicked off. Much different than my ongoing GH 1e game.

Crothian, when you say "OD&D" do you mean the original books (as does diaglo) or 1e?

The orginal box set. I have and played for many years 1e. It is a lot of fun and I still enjoy it every now and then.

Well, rock on my friend!

For my own version of the game (heavily modified), I am using 3.5 for the basic rules outline, then mining the best (IMHO, or course) of 3rd party materials and previous editions (especially for flavour). I can certainly understand the pull of those older editions.

Well, I'm just a young pup and never had the chance to play OD&D. After meeting diaglo, though, I am going to have to give it a try. It has a certain elegance about it...a simplicity that I have been looking for.
