The glory of OD&D

I'm gonna need to change Diaglo's user title to Diaglo "Svengali" Ooi...

Crothian, let us know how it goes; I get the general idea, from reading the "Hoyle's" adventures, but I'll be curious to see how another group plays out. Me, I can't envision making that much material up for a game.

Wow. Besides dialgo's uber social skills, are there any reasons why you're making the switch? You always seemed so vested in the current edition, Crothian.

Well, I'm the last person to say this, but vesting in a system shouldn't necessarily be a call to never look at another system again. I try to avoid them because I'm generally a collector so when I start on one book, I move onto another and another. heck, I pretty much have the first run of all the first edition Exalted books even though I've only played a handful of games.

But at my time has gottne shorter, that vestment has meant more to me in terms of NOT having to make up stuff to cover dozens of situations ranging from common skill sets and hand to hand and grappling, to new spells and innovative game mechanics that I'm too lazy to look up on my own.

I'm stunned, I tell ya, stunned.

Happy to hear of another convert. No reason one can not play OD&D and still enjoy other versions of the game, or other RPGs altogether. I know I do.

The must crucial element, if you ask me (but who the hell asked me?), to enjoying OD&D or any other rules light game is trust in the DM/Referee.

3.x has all the rules, in black and white. So if a player wants his PC to take some particular action then he probably already knows what sort of roll will be required, and all the possible consequences of success or failure. With OD&D, the rule may not already be written or in use in the game. Oftentimes the referee decides, seemingly on-the-fly, what sort of roll, if any, should be made. If the players do not trust the referee/DM, or if the actually see him as an adversary, then there will be all sorts of debate over whether the game is fair.

I don't know if I could run OD&D, or even if I could play in a game run by someone other than diaglo. The guy has so much faith in the game, and runs it with such confidence, and honestly the rules just seem to disappear into the background. Last session I never even looked at my character sheet. I think this is what people mean about the rules not getting in the way of role playing.

Best of luck to Crothian, and to your group.

Hello All,

First time poster, long time RPGer. I started with Holmes ed. D&D in 1980 and after a few weeks moved over to AD&D. At that time, we weren't playing any settings, worlds or realms, just a few disjointed dungeon crawls. I didn't join a campaign until I met another gamer that was running The Fantasy Trip (think GURPS daddy). After that, I played TFT, AD&D, D&D, Runequest, Space Opera, Boot Hill, Tunnels and Trolls, Aftermath, Twilight 2000, Call of Cthulhu, Top Secret, James Bond, Doctor Who, Chivalry and Sorcery, 3e and probably quite a few others that are slipping my mind. Many of these were campaigns that went on for months or years, and a few were a nighter every now and then. The point is, it's never occurred to me, ever, to play one single game.

vivent la différence! :D

What makes you think I'd be leaving this place?

Drat...I thought you go hang out with all the other Grognards at Dragonsfoot. As they cant eveen stand to hear the words 3.x. Which is why they call it TETSNBN. Oh well, it looks like I will have to go back to the drawing board. :(

3e is not dead to me nor does it offend me. I like EN World and even if I leave D&D all together, I'll still be here.
