Pathfinder 1E The Haunting of Calithil Manor

Theia Merryweather, Black Mage
[section]

Following Zinnelis, Theia steps into the center of the icy room. The light from the elemental illuminates the ghostly pallor of the mage's near translucent skin. She whispers a magic word, "scintillat'', and four spheres of glowing light fly to the corner of the room, providing additional sources of light. After another word, "exploro", Theia intently focuses her observation magicks in all directions, hoping to find the next clues to the missing's whereabouts.

Aelspeth Noromiel, Novice Conjurer

Aelspeth steps into the room behind Zinnelis and Theia, shivering as her fur-lined boots crush the light frost over the floor. As Zinnelis approaches the bed, she whisper-shouts, "Wait, Ranger! I want to ward myself before we go poking further."

Aelspeth reaches into her component pouch and produces a tiny vial, similar to those she uses to blast her enemies with colorful illusions. This vial differs, though, being stoppered not with cork but with a metallic cap. The wizard twists the cap a quarter turn and stoops down to begin shaking a silvery powder onto the icy floor. With the powder she draws a circle around herself. She quickly licks her finger and begins to trace glowing silver sigils within the circle, shapes resembling an unearthly language. That done, she twists the vial's cap shut and returns it to her pouch. The sigils slowly fade but a faint hum can be heard from near the elf. She draws her sword in anticipation.

Calithil Manor - Master Suite

As Zinnelis pulls back the curtains of the bed, Theia's detect magic spell takes effect. Her eyes are immediately drawn to runes on the floor that only her magic-enhanced sight can make out. It is a massive runic circle that covers the entire floor of the room, so intricate that it must've taken days or weeks to create. Some of the symbols seem familiar, but the majority are foreign to her. There is no doubt in her mind that this is the nexus of the necromantic energy that suffuses the manor.

As Theia continues to study the writing, Zinnelis is surprised to find a figure lying in the aged bed. It appears to be an elven woman in her twenties. Her skin is extremely pale, and there are dark circles beneath her eyes. Her overall appearance is of one suffering from long sickness. As near as he can tell she isn't breathing. There is something distinctly familiar about her, but Zinnelis can't quite place it.

As Aelspeth finishes a runic circle of her own and her spell takes effect the air around her practically crackles. The feeling of negative energy pushing against her spell takes her breath away. There is an enormous power in the room, and not of the pleasant variety.

[sblock=Spellcraft - Theia (DC 25)]
After taking a moment to think about the combinations of runes traced on the floor, Theia is able to piece together the circle's function. It is a powerful spell designed to preserve a person on the absolute verge of death. Though a combination of a modified form of a Repose spell and an even more unorthodox soul trapping spell the individual is left neither alive nor dead. As to why someone would do this, that is left up to her imagination.

[sblock=Intelligence Check - Zinnelis (DC 8)]
It hits Zinnelis why the woman looks familiar. She is one of the two people depicted in the painting in the great room. No doubt that makes her the lady of the manor.

[sblock=OOC]
Yeah combat is tough with all ranged fighters. Is there anyone knocking around the DWI who could help?

Theia Merryweather, Black Mage
[section]

The master suite darkens a shade as the fire elemental winks out of existence. The mage closes her eyes, and the absolute necromantic power of the room overwhelms. Her extremities quaver slightly due to the magnitude of the enchanments. "This room is the eye of the storm."

Theia glances at the bed and it's prisoner, and a slight look of sadness flashes across her countenance. The sweet release of death is much more preferable than this....

A sigh. "So what shall we do about this? Leave her be? Give her the gift of death and finish taking her life? Even combined, I don't believe we have strong enough magics to counter this. None of this explains where the master we are looking for went, however." A small part of her is actually quite jealous of the power observed.

"Zinnelis, perhaps there something is in the tome you found? We could take a look."

As the curtains parted, Zinnelis lowered his bow at the sight of the elven woman lying there. He recognized her from the portrait downstairs. There was a sort of sad beauty to her features. He stepped around the bed as he stared down at her.

“This...this is an abomination…” Zinn murmured quietly Gently he reached out and caressed the woman’s face. He lightly brushed a lock of her hair back from her face. Her skin was cold to the touch, like the rest of the room.

The elven ranger was pulled out of his thoughts by Theia’s words. He put up his bow as he turned to her. “We end the spell,” he said, “and let the gods decide her fate.”

Zinn crossed over to a vanity table nearby. He dug the book out of his pack and set it on the table. “I will leave the magical expertise in your hands,” he told Theia, pulling the chair out for her. “See what you can find.”

[sblock=OOC]I can go melee if it’s needed. Better than a wizard :) No offense.[/sblock]
