The hazard of posting your email...

So a couple months ago, I posted an email address in my posting. It was a special email, just for that one purpose. I did that just in case this very thing happens. Anyway, I'm now receiving spam to the email address I posted. Fortunately, I can kill that account and boune the email back. But it's still annoying.

I certainly don't blame Morrus et al. Just means that people come in here and spider email addresses from posts.

Just thought I'd warn those few of you who may not know any better.

You can also list your email like this: me@myISPaddress.NoSpam.com

and the bots can't get it. Then, anyone who wants to mail ya simply removes the "NoSpam" (or whatever you insert here) part. That way you can still use your email (if you so choose) and not worry too much about the goofy spammers.

Thanks for letting us know, I would have never known that.

But don't you think it would just be a bit easier if there were no way for bots to get our e-mail addresses?

That works somewhat, but it's not foolproof. A lot of newer-generation harvesting bots collect that stuff and parse it, recognizing and taking out stuff like that. Especially when they're more popular things like nospam or [at] or such.

Your best bet is to just not list your e-mail, or come up with something truly creative.

True true....but a lot of the older bots still can't pick 'em out. :) However, I do agree, the best thing to do is just not list your email at all. Or if you must, do something like above, or something like this perhaps:

myemailATmyispDOTcom

I've been having some scumbag(s) send me worms & viruses for the last 2 weeks to my 'junk email' account. My anitvirus catches them all and I have message filters up now to stop them from coming. Why do losers like this exsist? Why do they make these worms & viruses? Some people need to be removed from the gene pool.

For me, the best solution is what I've done. Get your own domain name with a catch-all email address. I can create an email address with anything for the username, and it will still get to me. I always assign it based on where I am. For instance, the email address I used to sign up on these boards was enworld@mydomain.com. If I ever get spam to that email address, I know where the spammer go it. (FYI--still in good shape there. My enworld email hasn't received spam.) The email address I posted in on of my posts here, however, did get spammed, so I know someone came in an harvested all email addresses (or at least mine) that were within posts. So now I can just go into my domain name control panel and shut off that email address.

It's worked quite well for me. Another example, I signed up on the Adobe user forums. The address I signed up with now gets spammed, so I can just shut it off.

It's a good solution, but it only works if you have your own domain and easy access to your email settings.

Too bad we can't just take a baseball bat to all spammers.

The scumbag is the guy who wrote the virus. The vector by which you received it is probably just some ordinary schmoe who got the virus himself, which spread to everyone in his address book.

Worms are way nastier though. You just get them. If you have a bad port open, bingo, it's in.
