The Hobbit: Can someone point me at some REAL info?

I had heard that if they do The Hobbit, it will be a TV mini series. I had heard with the Baski production ran out of cash, and thats why it kind of fell apart at the end.

I was talking with a movie-buff friend of mine recently, and what he said was that New Line (?) who produced the LOTR films bought the rights to make The Hobbit pre-emptively, but they forgot to buy the rights to distribute it. Those are in the hands of another company and they have not been able to come to an agreement about who should get what share of the $ pie.

LOTR producer and director talk about Hobbit movie...

Producer Mark Ordesky told The Herald Sun at the recent premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King that a movie on The Hobbit remains possible:

"There could be a movie about 'The Hobbit.' Enough said."

Meanwhile, director Peter Jackson added the following:

"Certainly if they want to talk to me about it I'd be keen. It would be wonderful to complete the set of films."

The main problem with The Hobbit relates to the rights to the book.

PJ won't be starting it in 2004, that's for sure; he's contracted to do King Kong next for ungodly amounts of money. After that, though, who knows? There will be money there to spend on it, we know that.

I was thinking about it the other day, wondernig what would have to get cut to make it a film. My bet would be that Beorn gets cut (and possibly the "Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire" chapter with the eagles), since of all the scenes, they're the least important to the plot -- much as I'd hate to see them go. The tail end (return journey) could be tightened up quite a bit, too.

It is dead certain that Jackson's next project will be King Kong. That kills any notion of him doing The Hobbit in '04.

Just what the world needs. Another King Kong movie. Maybe once he's done, he'll turn his attention to The Three Musketeers. That's about overdo for another feature film.

I remebered this thread from a month or so ago and when I saw something was mentioned I couldn't resist, with all the publicity surounding RotK I figured something would come up on it, it's the only way they can get another sequel out of the property (I doubt the Silmarillian would translate to film real well).

I'm not looking for to the King Kong remake, is there not something else he can do that hasn't been beaten to death yet?

The Simarillion would not translate well to film at all. (A mini-series, perhaps? ) Also, iirc, Saul Zaentz owned the film rights to LOTR & Hobbit, not any other of JRRT's work (Tolkien sold him the rights years ago for a bushel of cash). The Tolkien estate (which owns all the rights to the Simarillion, etc.) is -and always has been - dead set against any film adaptations and most licensing as well.
