The Iconics are out in force

Agreed. That and Heroes at Rest are already two of my favorite pieces of D&D art, and almost worth the price of the book by themselves. They make the D&D adventuring experience seem almost real.

Huh ... man it's been YEARS since I thought of it ... but aren't the poses from that ... either the same or very similar to another piece of art from the Dragonlance boxed set?

Swear I've seen those poses before ... 'cept the other one they had a dead dragon ?

I think Lucio Parillo and Michael Komarck are fast becoming two of my favorite WotC artists currently working--and possibly two of my favorite ever. :)

My favorite has to be them approaching the Caves of Chaos!

I REALLY like the new artwork overall. Dragonpunk/anime is out, classic is in. Reminds me of the 2e stuff (IMO 2e had the best art direction). The art gives a real sense of epic adventure rather than hack and slash combat like most 3e art. I actually wasn't interested in picking this up, and I have to say the art alone has changed my mind enough on what WotC's purpose for this book is, that I may get it.

I think you may be thinking of the first color pic in the original 2e PHB (dead dragon and some of the poses) crossed with the box art for 2e Dragonlance (positional relationship of characters, overall setting). It is very reminiscent, but looking at them, I can't be sure if it's intentional or not.

The only Iconic I know a sliver of background about is Regdar. He was a street urchin in Greyhawk, and was saved from muggers by a cleric of Pholtus. He learned combat skills and literacy from the cleric, who even tried to turn Regdar into a priest of Pholtus. But Regdar's vocation was to smash cut things up and he remained a Fighter, albeit a Good one.

Shoddy editing. I mean, It's LIDDA - the size is all wrong (for her to be an elf), she even has the dreadlocks and the leather armour, and everything :\

The only thing I can think of is that they meant for another pic to go there and someone changed the pic but forgot to change the description.... happens alot in the WOTC books.

I've notived that as well. Everyone has a different take on his. I mean, Krusk is Krusk, but Jozan can be John, Johny, Joe, Joey, Joseph, Josephina, etc. That picture has to be the forst I ike of him (although the ELH picture is escaping ATM).

Yeah. His facial features changes with the changes in Washington State weather... If it wasn't for the armor and/or pic description, we wouldn't know it to be Jozan at all....

As for the ELH, there's two pics of him:

and this one:

Granted, I've been trying to figure out from the various pics what race Regdar happens to be... he looks like an African American in some shots, white in some and a mix of both in others....
