The Interests

Jack7

First Post
After having various private messages, discussions, and email correspondences with some of you it occurred to me that it might be easier to understand each other, to understand the various gaming and other interests we (as a gaming group) share, or do not share, if we knew a bit more about the backgrounds of the other members of this board with whom we are conversing, debating, arguing, or discussing various issues.

To that end I created this thread.

In it you can present your personal and individual interests and then others can gain some type of better understanding of who you are, what your interests are, and what is the nature of your background. As well as what your exact gaming interests are in relation to your other interests. I'll start off.

You don't have to use this format (the one I'm using) by the way, you can express your interests in any way or form you like. But this thread is not for argument (you can do that in other threads) or for the attacking of the interests of others, rather it is for presenting your personal background and interests and then getting some kind of idea of the background and interests of others. And of course the interests of various people are going to diverge on points, and will sometimes overlap at other points. But the intention is so that you can understand the other fella, or gal, a little better, and thereby know something about their background and where they are coming from so that the next time you read something they've written or argue some opinion they've expressed their position might make a little more sense to you.

Perhaps a few working relationships and even a few friendships will develop from this effort.

Art - My favorite general type of art is from the Renaissance and High Renaissance. Though I very much like some classical ancient art. I also like impressionism, and surrealism. I'm not much for most contemporary, modern art. I like highly symbolic art with many different inferences and alternating or hidden frames of reference. As for me, I sketch, illustrate and paint. I also dabble in creating architectural plans and to tell you the truth wish I had far more time to do so. I also compose music (my favorite forms being classical art music and opera, but also rock and roll) and play the piano. I like ancient and Medieval music as well. I write poetry, but very little modern stuff, mostly classical forms. When I have the chance, which is not often, I take photographs.

Religion - I am a Christian and have been since a little boy. As a teenager I studied Raja Yoga from a yogin (originally from Thailand but he studied in India from his personal master) and on up into my twenties. As for my Christian faith I have a strong interest in mysticism, and also like studying eschatology and prophecy, and studying languages like Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Sanskrit. I like to meditate, but don't get too as often as I'd like, and to pray and to engage in prayer experiments. There is however also a strong practical or pragmatic side to my religious faith, and I am a church treasurer, and assist or help run several mission and ministry projects. I have a lot of friends who are missionaries, stationed all over the world and I often keep in contact with them. I college, before switching majors I was studying to be a priest. After my children are grown and I and my wife retire I plan on returning to the priesthood to become ordained as a Greek Orthodox priest.

Science - My first scientific love from when I was a little boy was physics, and I still love both physics and astrophysics. Over time though I developed a strong interest in biology and genetics, and follow developments in both fields very closely. I am a trained medic with interest in medicine, and I develop my own medicines and treatment regimens. In my twenties I found I was pretty good at chemistry and have developed a number of chemical and biochemical formulae, mostly for use in non-lethal weapons, or as medicines. I also like the study of criminology, criminalistics, and military science. My original major in college was Religion and Philosophy, but that later changed to psychology, then ended up with studies in criminal psychology. I help homeschool my children and so I have a personal interest in developing better educational methods and curricula. I have a telescope and often study the moon, and occasionally Mars.

Vocation/Professional - Writing - I am a freelance non-fiction writer and journalist. I am now also trying my hand at fiction, but I've just started those efforts. I also engage in writing analyses and papers and occasionally assist on military matters. Business - I used to run my own business brokerage company handling start up ventures and IPOs. Detective - I have a background in criminal and detective work. Occasionally I assist my friends in the military (a lot of my friends have military backgrounds) on matters related to terrorism, analysis, criminal matters, or Intel, but this is usually on an unofficial basis.

Historical/Historical Epochs - My favorite historical epochs or time periods are (in no particular order): some of the Egyptian dynasties, the later Babylonian era, Greece in the time period of the Peloponnesian War, The Byzantine Empire from the founding of Constantinople to about 900 AD, the Holy Land around the time of Christ, and Israel and Judea around the era of the prophets, the Mayan era in Central America, the first imperial periods in China, the Age of Charlemagne in Europe, the periods of the Crusades, the Muslim period of scientific discovery and invention, the Ashoka period in India, the Renaissance, the Victorian Age, the period of the Frontiersmen and the Mountain men (Daniel Boone, Dave Crockett, etc.), the period of the French and Indian Wars, the Age of Napoleon, the era of British Naval Supremacy (age of sail), the American Civil War era, the Frontiers and Indian Wars and the period of the American West, the Second World War, the period of the Cold War, the early days of Space Exploration, and our current age.

Avocation/Hobbies - I like to Vad, and also to explore in rural areas. Occasionally I participate in archaeological expeditions, usually industrial archeology. I lift weights, hit baseball a lot, and ride mountain bike. I used to play soccer and run a lot but had to give that up after breaking my back. As rehabilitation I started throwing the discus and fell in love with it. I still throw, but am not great. It helps me through and I like it. Lately I started P90X, modified the program for myself, and it helped get me into such good shape I could take up running again without much back pain, but usually only about a mile to mile and a half at a time. I read a lot and like to go hiking and fishing. I used to box and sword-fight a lot as a kid. I raise and cross-breed Saint Bernards and Great Danes, and will eventually take up breeding horses.

Entertainment - Mostly I read. Very rarely I watch television or go to the movies. I much prefer exploring and being out of doors. I don't play sports much anymore because of my injuries, but do hike and throw discus, bike, stuff like that. I play with my kids and we go to the lake or mountains. I like going on expeditions. An old buddy got me to kayaking and if I had the time I'd do a lot more of that.

Gaming - I enjoy Role Playing Games. I also like historical wargaming, and some board games. I like some video and computer games but don't often have much time to play such games. I sometimes design simulations and training simulations for clients. I like to write adventures and mission scenarios. I design games, although recently only for my own interests, for my players, and for my friends. Recently I have given idea to designing for publication and so I'm now involved in a few such contests. As for design principles and general design philosophy I'd like to more closely integrate real world elements, history, art, literature, poetry, religion, culture, and science into game design. I also like the idea of education game design. I have been asked to help write the script for a video game, and I've been involved in a few projects concerning Virtual Reality, and I am considering various aspects of VR design. I like the idea of Viral gaming and I have already drawn up the sketch notes for a series of three inter-related Alternate Reality games (although really I call them Parallel Reality games, because they are based upon the real history of the locale in which they take place) that I plan to write. And I am interested I further developing transferable skill simulations.

Gaming Genres - I enjoy many different gaming genres. I like fantasy gaming, historical gaming (and even re-enactments), and wargaming. I also like sci-fi gaming, detective gaming, modern gaming, military and espionage games. I enjoy pulp and adventure gaming, and occasionally super-hero gaming. And some horror and weird gaming if it is well done. Generally speaking I prefer my games to tend towards more realism in nature, and to tend towards more role play and interactivity than to be just exercises in tactical combat (though I like interesting tactical combat situations).

Alright, your turn...

Art - I would say I am less a fan of specific art movements, but some that I have found myself drawn too, and as you can tell is somewhat wide-ranging:
-Impressionism
-Post-Impressionism
-Pop Art
-Expressionism
-Romanticism
-Concept Art
-Realism
-Art Photography (in the many forms it takes)

I myself would consider myself a Concept Artist. This has obviously been impacted by my love of fantasy, sci-fi, etc. and thus it is quite a common theme in what I sketch. Though according to my friends I have a common theme as well of drawing, "strong willed and individualistic appearing characters".

For music, I can't play or sing but for genres: Classical, Jazz, Industrial, Techno, EBM, Futurepop, Synthopop, Goth, some Metal, Folk, Chamber, and others can't think of right now probably.

Religion - I would call myself a athiest with a mean streak of supernatural belief that is trimmed by skepticism. Essentially I'm athiestic about the belief in a god/gods and any heaven and hell or what not. However I remain open to the idea and have some belief in the supernatural but won't put any faith in that completely without scientific backing.

Science -
I have never been much of a fan of doing "hard science", however I like exploring the impact they will have on life and where they could head off too. So to give an example, I couldn't do stem-cell or genetic research but I would dive right into what the social and political consequences could be/are. My main area of focus is on humanities and social science, specifically such areas as; psychology, gender studies, sociology, crimnology, archeology and anthropology.

Vocation/Professional - Currently I am in college to gain a diploma in, "Social Service Work", whether or not I will pursue that as a final career choice is debatable. I may also persue crimnology (profiling) or a field dealing with sociology.

Historical/Historical Epochs - I would say some of my favourite would include; both the Industrial Revolution and Second Industrial Revolution (and all the various eras within those, ie; Victorian and Edwardian), the Roaring 20's, the Dark Ages, Atomic Age, Information Age, to name a few.

Avocation/Hobbies - Not really that many, I would really state that only drawing and writing would count as "hobbies" the rest would fall under entertainment. Perhaps gaming as well.

Entertainment - Hiking, video-games, drawing and writing (also could be hobby), gaming (could be hobby), movies, used to do fencing, and simply going out with friends.

Gaming - Obviously Roleplaying games, and also both console and PC computer gaming though mostly computer of the two. Some boardgames if the time is right and that about covers it.

Gaming Genres - Lets see here; A fair majority of the "punks", such as; Steampunk, Dieselpunk, Cyberpunk, Post-Cyberpunk. I like my Horror and Mystery games and these usually run into my other genres as well. Fantasy as well, but usually not simply "fantasy", it usually is rampant with elements from various genres be it; Horror, Mystery, Steapunk and even Cyberpunk (either in actual technological stuff or just themes).

Gaming
I play RPG:s for pure escapism value. I like to explore, investigate, and socialize,
and is frankly not very fond of the combat side of them, something that has grown stronger lately. (You know, that "traipsing off through fairy rings and interacting with the little people", that D&D isn't about anymore, according to James Wyatt in "Races and Classes". :()

To be honest about it, I'm suffering from long-time depression since a few years past, and the lighter, escapist side of the game helps with that. Severed heads, spraying blood, or spilled gut content does not help you to sleep at night, but daydreaming about your character flying over an elven tree city or running in deep woods in wolf shape does... ;)

I used to play a lot of war games, but that interest has completely dried up. I also prefer more light-sided gaming fare on the board game side, as in the wave of recent german-origin board games.

Art
I definitively like low-brow art :). Pulp-style or comic book illustrations, especially manga/anime style.

I like to dabble a little with illustrating on my own, and keep myself to this style.

Professional
I work as a senior computer programmer since many years, currently specializing in systems integration. Keywords for the initiated: XML, IBM MQ, Java, Websphere.

This means that I definitevely do not want to play tech types in RPGs.

Hobbies
I like to do some illustrating, when I can dig up the energy :). (See http://matsohrman.com/ for examples.)

I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. Used to read a lot of crime stories, but when the structure of the novels became more interesting than the stories themselves, I got bored of them. View a lot of Anime.

Religion
Atheist/Agnostic. I was a member of the Swedish State Church as long as I lived in a diocese where the goverment-imposed church tax went to the maintenance of medieval historical churches, but when I moved to a richer diocese, I left it.

Historical/Historical Epochs
I prefer times and lands that never were over those that really existed... :)

Art; I love everything older than 20th century and am fascinated by what ancient art tells us about the world view of people from long ago. I particularly love the statuary of ancient Greece, the cave art of both the Aborigines and of the hunter-gatherers of France, and the menhirs and megaliths of the Neolithic period.

Science; I love all areas of science, though my own professional expertise is in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology (I have a Ph.D and 17 years experience as a research scientist). I have started a degree in maths recently to make good my knowledge of the physical sciences, which I find fascinating.

Religion; Not religious but quite spiritual. I believe in a positive force that is without form or substance. I also believe there are immutable laws that seem to govern the spiritual Universe just as there are for the physical one. The closest formal religion I have ever found to it was Taoism, but even that is not exactly right.

Historical Epoch; love Roman and Dark Age History but also like archeology and the Iron Age period.

Hobbies; I like hiking, roleplaying, writing (fiction), reading (bad fantasy and Sci-Fi as well as science, economics and history) and drawing maps. Greatest loves are sword-fighting, sailing (or anything else on the water) and horse-riding, though the opportunities to do them get less and less as the years go by. I also greatly enjoy travel to remote areas and am interested in bushcraft and living with ethnic peoples.

I often wish I had about a hundred lifetimes to follow all my interests (sigh).

I may also persue crimnology (profiling) or a field dealing with sociology.

Don't do it, you'll spend the rest of your life chasing burned out, drained of life, horrid corpses. If you pursue sociology I mean.

though my own professional expertise is in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology

Interesting. Excuse the pun.

though the opportunities to do them get less and less as the years go by.

That's always the way I'm afraid.

This means that I definitevely do not want to play tech types in RPGs.

That's an interesting observation. I practice detective and analytical work and often enjoy playing a detective. I wonder what is the ratio of those who enjoy playing characters related to or similar to their real life occupations and the ratio of those who play opposite to or counter to their real life occupations?

There are two major reasons for me not to play techie PCs while being someone with a tech-oriented background and work myself.

1) My work is one of the things I want escape from while engaging in this kind of escapist activity. Deadlines, indeterminate bug hunts, frustrations, stress... you dont want to bring those with you, and they are firmy tied to the very notion of computer work in my mind.

2) Many worlds, rule sets and splat books simply don't survive applying the tech mindset.

E.g. playing Shadowrun, I noted that:
(A) There are cameras small enough to put into cybereyes.
(B) My character has a data jack that can recieve live video.
So I went to my Game Master and told him that I wanted to put such a camera on
the barrel of my gun and hook it up to my data jack, so that I could snipe around
corners with impunity.

The GM turned almost white, and told me that if I ever mentioned that at the gaming table I would immediately be thrown out of the campaign, as my little (to me obvious) invention would absolutely ruin each and every firefight of the campaign.

A second such Shadowrun incident was wanting to correct the obvious design flaws of the Safe House with the controlling electronics for the MagLocks on the outside of the doors - I wanted to move them to the inside, where they would be safe from tampering... :)

The one example that I did not bring to the GM's attention was questioning the validity of the CyberZombies that the opposition employed. Shadowrun CyberZombies were people so cybered that their bodies almost literally fell apart - after being cybered and magicked above the medical limits of the game at a ridiculous expense (think jet fighter prices), they developed rapid cancers, mental disorders, fugue states, went into comas, lasting for a very short period before dying and rendering all that expense worthless. At the same time, there existed "rigging sets" in the game that allowed you to remote-control a vehicle with full sensory feedback, making it feel as if it was your body. So, why not leave out the problem-ridden, certain-to-die meat part of the CyberZombie, and just bolt the cyber parts together, and run the result through such a rigging set at a fraction of the price, as (1) you did not need to special-adapt the cyber to the meat at a x7 or more cost multiple, and (2) no expensive magic rituals were needed?

Much simpler to play a character where you can pretend to know nothing of such stuff.

This seems a really cool way for us to get to know each other here at ENWorld.

Art- I love art of all types and styles. Paintings, sculptures, architecture; I love it all. One of my favorite pieces is the bust of Philip the Arab. It's a great example of the late Roman realism, but it shows so much emotion.

Religion- I'm mostly areligious. If I had to classify myself I'd say I'm between Deist and Atheist. I am fascinated by theology and philosophy though, and love looking at floor plans of old monasteries.

Vocation / Professional- I'm an IT person. Currently doing general web / help desk support for the Smithsonian Institution. My true love is writing, but as I've yet to be published I'll just call that a vocation.

Historical / Historical Epochs- I have a degree in History so I can be termed a historian. I love all history, but my absolute obsession is with Roman history from the foundation to the fall of Constantinople. I love Rome, I learned Latin to aid my studies I love it so much. Second on my list is Medieval, which I think many D&D players enjoy.

Avocation / Hobbies / Entertainment- Besides my voracious appetite for books I also love watching movies and TV shows on DVD. I tend to wait for things to be released on DVD before I get into them. I also enjoy computer games. Lord of the Rings Online is my current favorite and will likely continue for a long time. Any other Brandywine players you can look me up as Therridan, but almost every member of the Kinship Doom of the Edain is probably me.

Gaming- I love gaming. Role-Playing Games, Board Games, and Card Games, I just can't get enough. I've been playing RPGs since 1980, when I was 8. D&D in its many incarnations has always been my favorite; but I also love Traveller, Call of Cthulhu and once upon a time Marvel Super Heroes. For Boardgames, I'm majorly addicted to Arkham Horror but don't have a regular group to play with.

Gaming Genres- As long as you have a story to tell I'll be there. I don't have any set genres for playing. For DMing I like heroic fantasy, but truthfully the world-building itself is my game when I DM.

Well, that's me in a brief introduction.

(B) My character has a data jack that can recieve live video.
So I went to my Game Master and told him that I wanted to put such a camera on
the barrel of my gun and hook it up to my data jack, so that I could snipe around
corners with impunity.

The GM turned almost white, and told me that if I ever mentioned that at the gaming table I would immediately be thrown out of the campaign, as my little (to me obviou2) Many worlds, rule sets and splat books simply don't survive applying the tech mindset.

E.g. playing Shadowrun, I noted that:
(A) There are cameras small enough to put into cybereyes.
s) invention would absolutely ruin each and every firefight of the campaign.

I don't know Tuft, it's a little off-subject but that kind of inventiveness and innovation would be welcomed in my games. I constantly encourage my players to invent and innovate. In my games I tell players to take what they know in real life and adapt and use such expertise and experience in-game.

As for ruining my games, as the DM I'd just have NPCs and others adapt their own combat and battle strategies and operational plans after they saw what the players did, assuming the NPCs survived.

To me that's a major part of what gaming is. Innovation. Creativity. Originality. Problem solving. Experimentation. Seeking advantage.

That would be welcomed around me, in real life and in-game.
There's profit and advantage in innovation.
There's stagnation and boredom and inferiority in never-ending conformity.

I love all history, but my absolute obsession is with Roman history from the foundation to the fall of Constantinople. I love Rome, I learned Latin to aid my studies I love it so much.

Me too. That's also why I learned Latin and Greek (Koine). Well, that and to examine scriptures and other texts in the original tongues.

I am a musician and I am active in the local music community. I write and record songs here in my own apartment, play guitar, bass, keyboards and whatever else I can get my hands on. I haven't really taken the time to put together a band yet though, I would really like to get on that soon. My personal taste in music tends towards Indie pop, Noisy Indie Rock and Chamber pop. I Often help friends and aquaintances in other bands with set-up/tear down and help them with sound-check.

I'm really interested in History and Politics, and I will read a ton about them both whenever something gets in front of me. I will spends hours/days/weeks reading entries on various things on wikipedia, especially these type of things. I am working on my BA in history on and off when I am in University.

I read comics. Mostly Marvel, I'm currently reading just about their entire line that occurs in the 'main' marvel universe. I can't get into DC, except batman, and him usually only in adapted properties (animated series, movies etc) However their vertigo line is often awesome, I am really enjoying House of Mystery now, and NORTHLANDERS is amazing. Great for realism and stuff for Vikings (hint for people thinking about running vikings in D&D)

I like to golf, it's pretty much the only sport I'll play now. I only started 3 years ago, but it's a great time, though SO frustrating.

as for games, I am a big fan of D&D and other roleplaying games, I've played MTG since 1997 (though I haven't really been an active player in the last year/year and a half.) Though I pretty much have given up on the idea of ever really playing the 'traditional' style of magic play- constructed, for drafting. I also used to really enjoy drafting when I played DDM for a short while. hard to get people to play that though. I also enjoy board games and card games, anything people put in front of me usually.
