The Jade Frontier (DM: Ukingsken, Judge: Lord Sessadore)

By now the house is pretty much a lost cause, but thanks to (and in spite of) your efforts, the fire dies down before it can spread to the barn. The family, which appears to consist of a mother, father, and young daughter, has come down from the loft and is huddled together, somewhat in shock. The immediate threat has now passed, and there are no kobolds to attack from the shadows. You yourselves now have time to catch your breath and look over these strangers.

I regret we were unable to save your house, is there any assistance that we can provide? A place nearby where you can take shelter? She turns to look at the other members of the party. I am Firete and this is Yishim, we have late arrived from Daunton. Perrhaps you can enlighten us on what has transpired here, my friends.

Cheysuli Sage

Cheysuli looks mounfully at the smouldering ashes that were once this family's home, she addresses the newcomers; "Greeting Firete, Yshim. We happened upon a Kobold raid of this farmstead and of course dealt with them as swiftly as we could. Unfortunately this is not the first homestead to be ransacked by the kobolds, though if we have our way it will be the last!" The dainty purple-haired tiefling says this last with grim determination.
She turns to the huddled family; "We would welcome anything you could tell us about the kobolds attacks, or anything else wierd that you have seen in recent moons. But then i would suggest that you take your youngling and head straight for Maoleth, I am sure that Lord Hashtesh will provide you with some temporary accomodation until we have routed these nasty creatures; and you can begin to rebuild."

Miranna stood watching the farmhouse burn for a few more moments. The flames seemed both fascinating and repulsive at once, and she had a hard time diverting her attention from the spectacle. After a while, though, she forced her mind to other matters, turning to the conversation going on behind her.

She gave a brief pitying glance to the surviving farmers. "It would be best if you sought other shelter, at least for a time. We seek to end the menace of these creatures, and with luck soon it will be safe for you to rebuild. But for now, it is NOT safe. Perhaps some of our folk might aid you in reaching the shelter of the city..." Those last words seemed directed towards Bricks and Patronis as much as to the farmers.

(OOC: An opening to move out the 'missing' players. Pause for reply/discussion)

Once the farmers were squared away, Miranna turned to the newcomers. "As to where the kobolds came from, we have some semblance of a map. I don't think any of the beasts survived for us to question, so unless you bring more information, we'll follow the map- though I think we may need a few moments rest first..." Her voice was still harsh and rough, but by now some of the tense, angry edge had left her features.

OOC: And an opening for a short rest, at least to reset our Encounter powers

Yes, how convenient.[/sblock]

"I don't know which direction they came from; they just sneaked up on us. I can't understand their language, but... I got the feeling they were trying to capture us alive. They practically herded us out of the house and into the barn. I don't even want to think about why they would do such a thing."

"No need to worry about that," Mr. Bricks replies. "Patronus here and I will get you back to town safe as you please."

Meanwhile, the girl has quietly walked over to Brenwar. "Excuse me, sir, but I couldn't help but notice your shield. It's... gleaming." Now that you notice it, the shield you took from the kobolds does look a little different. The light seems to be catching the inscriptions in a peculiar manner, although it may just be a trick of the fire. "It's very pretty."

"Miyu! Come on. We need to get going."

Miyu smiles up at you and runs back to her parents.

ooc: Patronus, Br. Bricks, and the family will return to Maoleth now unless someone wants to continue talking to them.

[sblock=Identifying magic items]Anyone trained in Arcana can inspect an item over a short rest to determine its magical properties. Assuming that someone does this with the shield, you discover it is a Large Shield of Protection. In addition to acting like a normal large shield, once per day as a standard action you can activate the item's power. You and one adjacent ally gain resist 10 to all damage until the end of your next turn.

On a related note, if you guys want you can put wishlists of items level 2-6 on your character sheets so I know what best to reward you with. Alternatively you can choose to be surprised and leave it up to me. Either way works for me.[/sblock]

First to the newcomers:
"Greetings friends, I am Brenwar Holyshield, a paladin of Palladys. I appreciate the help with the house if only I had been a bit faster perhaps we could have saved more of it." He looks over at the the house that is now just a pile of smoking rubble, "even some of it."

To the Departing Friends:
Brenwar nods at Mr. Bricks and Patronus and shakes their hands as they leave, "May Palladys bless you on your journey."

To the little girl:
Brenwar nods at the compliment and replies in kind to the little girl, "It is pretty but not as pretty as you are. Good luck on your journey and may Palladys protect you." He gives the child a nice smile.

Once she leaves he approaches his fellow adventurers, "Perhaps someone that knows a thing or two about magic beyond getting blasted by it can look at this shield? It is the one we recovered from our earlier encounter with the kobolds. I didn't think that such creatures would be carrying magical items but perhaps you could take a look?"

[sblock=Short Rest] If we take a short rest I will spend one surge to get to 28/29, unless Shayla has a healing word to throw on me[/sblock]

Yishim introduces himself to the group. My name's Yishim, but I told you that already. I'm a wizard from Daunton, schooled in the arcane arts. We've learned more about the scourge afflicting this region from you than either Firete or I had time to discover on our way here. So if you have a map, I say we follow it.

He asks Brenwar if he can inspect the shield. After a few minutes inspecting inscriptions, he's able to understand the magic abilities of the shield, and explain them to Brenwar. So once a day, by calling on the shield's own inherent magic, you will be nearly impenetrable to damage for a short time. If you plan it right, you can extend the protection to one of your allies next to you.

With that, Yishim rests for a few minutes to gather his strength. He then looks to Brenwar, Cheysuli and Miranna for where to go next.
