The Last of Us (HBO Max)

Uggggggggghhhhh. Maybe it’s because they keep shortening the damn season. I think a 4th season would require significant padding.

4th season? They are brave in the face of a "no Pedro; no show" meme. Its only going to get worse when season 3 has 90% less Ellie in it.

That's the thing - I can plausibly see where they would do a split into a 3rd and 4th, but I think that would mean very, very little Ellie in Season 3, and that might be a bit too much.

It's already been hinted and makes sense from the game story line. This will be an interesting exercise to see if they can bring audiences around or if they really lose them.

But they got rights for adaptation of both games, so it would be waste not to do it. There is enough game fans to justify it.

No Pedro, no show is problem of their own making. If you frame entire season as Joel and Ellie story and set them up as only protagonists of the show, kiling of one of them in the beginning of S2 will turn away some of the audience, even if they are not just Pedro fans. Other problem is, Ellie is not that relatable as a character. She is 19yo acting out like 14yo.

They could have used different approaches that mitigate that. One is self contained seasons set in same universe, like American Horror Story. Other is having ensemble of characters with parallel story lines, like GoT. AHS aproach would probably be better. S1- Joel's story, end with Joel dying. S2- Elie's story. S3- Abby's story. But each season is full story of that title character and it follows them to whatever end they envisioned.

Im not saying Last of Us shouldnt have been made, im thinking 4 seasons is too much. Not everything needs to run in perpetuity and this game story is a perfect example of something that is long enough, but not long enough in the tooth.

To be fair she is a 19 year old acting like a 19 year old now. I think the story they tell int he sequel game is a good one, but its awkward in television season format.

Im actually glad they are not doing an anthology in the Last of Us universe. What really sets TLOU apart is its strong character driven story focus.

Depends how much of source material they have. 4 seasons is maybe streching it, but if S3 also has 7 episodes (or even 6), there could be case made to justify making S4. S2 needed one more episode. If they are going for Abby as S3 lead, they needed to give her more screen time for audience to connect with her character, give us viewers time to start caring about her story. Jumping from one character to another in game is different, cause you control that character, you step into that characters shoes. In shows, you need that emotional build up.

Yep. Acting like regular 19yo today. Not like 19yo that grew up in post apocalyptic warzone fighting to survive and is part of town military force. I would argue that 14 yo Ellie was more mature and level headed than 19yo one. It's not only her though. Dina is in same boat.

One can do both. Have anthology and have every seson be strong character driven story.
