I think this Last Samurai movie could be very good.

Just imagine. The last samurai going on a quest to find all the other samurai. Along the way, she meets up with a motley collection of wacky individuals, including Shmendrick, the failed shugenja, and Molly Grue, the retired geisha. Their quest takes them to Haggard the daimyo, who rules over a decaying, abandoned castle where he sits all day, brooding over his memories of his glory days. Yes, it could be very good indeed.

I'm not sure where Tom Cruise would come into it, though.

Any movie featuring a Japan between 1886 and 1920 is a good thing because it's not often seen. (Hence why I'm big on Rurouni Kenshin.) If this movie looks as good as the teaser makes it appear to be, then it will surely be Oscar-worthy.

I'd heard nary a word about this movie, before seeing its preview at yesterday's premier of "Matrix Reloaded". At first, I thought it was going to be a condensed remake of James Clavell's Shogun, which was a TV miniseries back in the early '80s. (Or was that the late '70s? Whatever.)

"The Last Samurai" certainly looks interesting... as long as it's not merely another star vehicle for Tom Cruise.

This is from imdb.com:

"A Civil War veteran, turned Winchester guns spokeman, the captain Woodrow Algren, arrives Japan in the late 1870s to train the troops of the emperor Meiji, as a part of break away from the long-held tradition of relying on employed samurai warriors to protect territories, as Meiji´s new army prepares to wipe out the remaining samurais. When Algren is injuried and captured by the samurai, learns about their warrior honor code from Katsumoto, the samurai´s leader and decide which side of the conflict he wants to be on..."

OK, so it's basically "Dances with Samurai."
