There's always such a thing as too valuable. It's just a matter of figuring out the exact price tag.

Well depends on what we are talking about here... If "the bad guys" got ahold of an item that could do any of those things, why would they care if they destroyed a pen that could cure cancer? That is why they are BAD guys...

Yeah, but if the reward for collecting all the items is great enough (Absolute power? Immortality?), they're not gonna ruin the entire thing unless there is absolutely no chance to complete the set, especially if it's a 'AS long as they hold the entire set' sort of condition.
