The Many Faces of Venus

Another day, another verse
The song continues to play
I went to my writer's desk
You got up to work another day
I laugh to myself as I see you to the door
"I love you, too" was all I could think to say

There is no doubt that I am so proud of you
A servant of the public, giving them a way to unwind
My mother said, "Don't you marry that crazy blonde"
But I knew you were and extravagent find

You came home to venison and mustard greens
The coda: a dark shiraz, a sunset over the beach
We sat on the back porch, watching the tide ebb
-and the fire in the sky slipping just beyond reach
Such an evening brings out the romantic in me
"Tell me what's on your mind," you beseech

Pianissimo, the night had come
Another glass, and I open up my heart
I speak of places I want to take you
-and things to do, but I don't know where to start

"There's plenty of time for that, my love"
Your words as silk, they envelope me
I feel your arms about my neck
And hear the crashing of the sea
I feel your warm lips against mine
And hear your heart furiously beat

Alone in our chamber the drumming intensifies
Arpeggio, yet keeping time with the beat
Crescendo, the chorus strikes
Then the music fades to a memory

I lie here in our chamber, considering your face
You smile at me with that knowing glance
-and had put your arms around me
Beginning the last verse of tonight's dance
Tomorrow morning will be the same refrain
I'll set the coffee, and you set out for the day
Surprisingly, thankfully, it isn't monotonous
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I saw you again today
No different from the last time, really
You were so talkative, rambling story after story
You made me laugh

What is it about you, my dear?
Everything seems at ease when you're around
But when apart I become melancholy again
I cherish this friendship we have

On a nameless tomorrow you'll come back my way
You'll have to tell me the story of it all
Just like you always used to
As if you truly were my sister

I wonder how it is the world changes when you enter
Every time I can't help but smile
B___ says that you're crazy
She can't live without you either, though

Your laugh comes from the deep
It fills auditoriums
But it's genuine
It's nice to know someone still knows how to laugh

I'll have to come visit you in your valley home
Where the laughter spills over the hills
Too many miles, too few smiles
Please remind me what it's like to be young again

I could call you Fortune
I am fortunate enough to know you so well
Karma, Fate, Luck, or Divine Appointment
We are friends for a reason.

A war so cold
Blood so hot

You stood by my side throughout the struggle
You held my hand during the siege
I can only repay you with my life
I can give you nothing less than victory

Nerves so cold
A temper so hot

You gave yourself wholly to me
You immersed your strength in my soul
I gained newfound courage
I gained the ability to overcome

A soul so cold
A heart so hot

You guided my hand with every stroke of blade
You focused my rage and my love
I fought to keep us both safe
I fought for our future

A malice so cold
Passion so hot

You hold my hand as the banners wave boldly
You burn in me again as the battle is won
I owe you the victory and the glory
I owe everything I am and ever will be to you.

Birth Mother of a king and priest
Glorious lady of the clouds
Curly locks and shapely figure
Anthems of your majesty abound

Growing, growing
As the first tree after a fire
A symbol of new beginnings
Another challenge to acquire

Heralds come and are sent away
Their errands gain haste
They carry the prayers of the Mother
Hushed not by any delay

Sweet woman, friend of the world
Giver of such a wonderful gift
A King, a King! To him we bring
-praises with which to uplift

Tho' tests will come and trial will go
He shan't forsake his origin
Forever basking in the light
-of a choice proper chosen.
