The more I read about D&D 3.5. the more...

And even if they could, they've got no interest in blowing their wad within a couple weeks of the announcement. They'll want to keep the buzz about the new edition going right up until the new books are released in July. Expect a steady trickle of information to come out week by week,

It would probably be wise to also expect a steady amount of whining & moaning, counter-whining & moaning, counter-counter whining & moaning, etc., along with the occasional well-aimed troll, until July.

Or August -- allowing for the "I can't/haven't gotten books yet" complaints, the "doesn't anyone have any patience" counter-complaints, the "why don't you have some patience" counter-counter-complaints, etc.

Then expect huge amounts of whining & moaning as various people find out that some things aren't how they wanted or expected them to be. Expect the Return of the Broken Shaft.

Or what? Will Skip Williams come to my house and take away all my books? Will Monte Cook break in and molest my dog? Will Gary Gygax attack me with his +6 Dentures of Doom?

I can guarantee that if someone comes to your house because you're not implementing the changes to 3.5, it WON'T be Skip, Gary or I.

Its only a monster. Changing a monster's stats won't cause all your class-books to suddenly become useless. How many adventures are Pit Fiends in anyway? I don't know of any.

WotC is slowly dispersing info in Dragon. That was their plan all along. Just because somebody is freaking out doesn't mean they shouldn't stick to their plan. Does it?
You are quite right that it is only a monster, but unfortunately, it is the ONLY information that we have on changes to monster - and it seems like a big change - so is this the biggest change or a representative change???? That is the question. If it is the biggest, sure there will be some malcontents that express thier displeasure. If it is representative, there will be ALOT more making the question of backward compatability a very fair question.

WotC release plan:

That depends - I can tell you that I plan on purchasing zero WotC books (or anything else heavy on crunch) until after the new products are released. I simply do not want to take the chance that my investment may become obsolete 5 months after purchasing it.

So if WotC is happy living with this impact on thier revenue stream, then they certainly can go ahead with their plan. But I can tell you if I was a third party publisher, I would be mighty ticked.....

You are correct. I know only what has been leaked so far, but so far it implies at least a lack of backwards compatability. I feel sorry for the 3rd party publishers as well. Tonight our group will meet and we will likely discuss what we are planning on doing. We are running a long term campaign so whether we change could go either way. If we opt to change I will likely not buy any non-3.5 complient material so no books till july, If we opt not to change I will buy only until july. Either way WotC has assuued that my purchases of 3rd party material will be cut in half for the coming year.

D'oh! There goes my plan to not use 3.5 rules, wait until you came with the baseball bats, knock you out with tranq darts, lock you in my basement, and force you to write custom-tailored products for food for the rest of your natural lives...

...or until I got fed up paying for food, or forgot to feed you, or something...

There are always malcontents happy to voice their hysterical displeasure as often as they can post. That's what makes up around 90% of all internet fandoms.

I think its pretty implicit given "Races of Faerun and Unapproachable East will be somewhat "forward-compatible" to 3.5, in that we've taken steps to incorporate some of the most "topic-sensitive""

Hard to imagine needing to make anything "forward-compatible" if the product is really supposed to be "backwards-compatible."

hehe

ok, now you guys out there can bash me for my logic.. :)

All I can say is I´ll download the SRD, check what´s new and keep what´s good. Good for me, anyways.

And if a player whines "but that's not what 3.5 says" I'll slap five levels of Warrior onto the troll that's attacking him.
