Think Clerics are generally the most powerful, for the reasons mentioned before. Although in actual play, they are rather 'limited' by having to follow the edicts of their god. (unless it's one of those silly alignment clerics).

On the other hand, I think a wizard with knowledge of what they're going up against and the correct feats/spells in their book will be even more powerful. But, IMO, the arcane lists have more impressive stuff than the divine.

At very high levels, I'd say the most powerful is the one with the highest initiative. :)


For my next DnD campaign, I'd be sorely tempted to give the cleric a 'prayer book' - think that would reign them in somewhat - IMO a good portion of their power is being allowed to pick pretty much any printed spell from allowed books. Gets very bad if using a large number of splatbooks. Might need to change the relationship between caster and gods to have this make sense.

In play, I don't find that to be any restriction at all. Most settings have a broad variety of gods, and cleric players just choose a god that is in line with the kind of personality they want to play. So "clerics must follow the edicts of their god" is no more of a restriction than "players must restrict their actions to those appropriate for their character's personality."
 

By the numbers, I think it's probably cleric.

That being said, the drain on the power of the cleric due to the average party's dependence on his or her ability to heal, it's largely balanced out.
 

Commoner

the Commoner is the MOST powerful class.

without them the rest of the world starves. doesn't reproduce. and eventually perishes.
 


Cleric.

And as long as D&D has a character class devoted to support and healing, it should stay that way. Even with the power of said class, it's hard enough finding players who want to play a cleric. Sure, some of the time they can cast neat spells while wearing armor and going toe to toe with the big bad monsters, but most of the time, they heal.
