I was actually posting this thread to get everyone's view (overall) of this year's movie crop versus past years, not start a singular debate over which movies were good and which were not. I can understand not liking a movie here and there and liking something that others did not, however try to look at the big picture. :)

If you didn't like this year, what year(s) did you like better? Also, keep in mind, I'm really only looking for movies released to theaters and not on DVD. And if you did like this year, why exactly and which movies stood out?

For example: Brown Jenkin didn't dig Brotherhood of the Wolf and only really liked Signs and will like LotR: TTT. But didn't mention a better year for like-genre movies. I would be interested in hearing different views on that front.

Additionally: Thanks, Mark for adding that much longer list to my own. I should edit my post. :)

That Dork Tower was good, I dig that comic. :)

No, this was a particuliar average year of movies. I haven't done the research to know which is better, but I know there is a few out there.

Of this years movies only Spiderman and Signs I was really impressed with. Most of the other movies was average or less.

Thanks for the list. Part of the reason I didn't give a comparison between years is that I have a problem remembering what years things came out. Now I will go check and see what I come up with.

No prob. ;)

Oh, me too. I can remember a few years but not all. Too many movies! LOL :)

This will take longer than I thought, but just for 1 comparison year.

1981:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Excalibur
Mad Max 2: The Road warrior
Time Bandits
Escape From New York
American Werewolf in London
Heavy Metal
Outland
Clash of the Titans
The Howling
Dragonslayer
Omen III: The Final Conflict
Tarzan, the Ape Man
Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy
The Hand

And for the Oscar: Chariots of Fire

I would stack this up against 2002 anyday.

The past couple years have been good to Geek culture in terms of a powerful revitalization of both the super-hero genre (Spider-Man, X-Men, Blade) and some of the best fantasy ever (Lord of the Rings, arguably Harry Potter). And Hollywood being what it is, this has sparked a ton of new super-hero projects, at least. Before Blade and X-Men, we have to go all the way back to the original Batman movie and the first Darkman movie for any good super-hero stuff.

Sci-Fi comes and sci-fi goes. There are lots of good sci-fi movies around.

I personally wouldn't include spy movies in the Geek genre, although there's arguably not much difference between Batman and James Bond. But I will say that Undercover Brother was WAY better than Goldmember or XXX.
