Switching darts in the hope of having a greater effect on his enemy, Jaguar shoots the sliver of shale, imbuing it with a mechanical node. When the dart strikes the injured girl, it emits a sound like banging on a large metal gong. The girl reflexively reaches for her wound with one hand then tries to cover an ear with the other. The second hand never makes it. She falls to the ground, no longer a participant in this fight. The other girl who is targeting Jaguar, flinches at the gonging and misses with her slung stone.

Whisper places the lodestone in his sling, imbuing it with the same type of electromagnetic node that he has been using. More tuned to the waylines, the lodestone emits a blinding flash of light when it strikes the girl. Though others can see the flash, it is only damaging to the struck acolyte. She falls to the ground, having lost consciousness.

No longer outnumbered two to one, the two young men quickly subdue the other two acolytes, but the chosen tactics do not cause their deaths. All four enemies lay, unconscious upon the damp ground. The two young men are both hurt from the sum of two battles and need to tend to themselves. Though it will make them very hungry, the two can make use of the essence from the four unconscious enemies, and they are carrying trail food to compensate.

Wild Jaguar will siphon the girl in the worse condition, then while eating will interrogate the acolyte that seems to be the leader, or the weakest willed. "What was your coin making scheme that required cultivating these bats for two seasons? And why Bridgetown was not supposed to save itself? What was your plan for it? Tell us, or if not you will suffer so horribly, that you will beg me to end your misery!" If the girl will satisfy them with her answers, he will finish her as painlessly as he can, or allow his friend to do this, if he can do it better.

Whisper takes a deep breath to affirm his resolve for what he knows he must do. Following his friends lead, he will absorb the lifeforce of his enemy in order to recover his own. Afterward, he joins the interrogation. “What malevolence provoked you to harm others, especially children, for financial gain? Was this idea yours, alone, or did you have help developing it?”

Though Jaguar Mahoao is more familiar with the task, Whisper seems to be slightly more effective, but both young men are able to restore themselves to full wellness in a matter of seconds. None of the acolytes died during this process so that two of them are quickly dispatched leaving the other two for questioning.

Both young men are far more persuasive at acquiring information than either enemy has the presence of mind to resist. The answers to the questions seem to be rather accurate. The girls are fully dedicated to an erroneous belief system “Our land is becoming too populated with people, which harms nature. The more people there are, the more likely war will happen, which does even more damage to nature.” Being akin to nature, Jaguar knows this to be an exaggeration, but the girls believe what they are saying.

The idea to cultivate vampire bats was explained to us by our mistress. We helped her gather the first few and bring them here. The bats usually feed from cattle. The amount of blood they draw would not really hurt a person, not even a child. They are more of a nuisance. After enough people were bitten, we would present ourselves to Bridgetown as a solution to the problem in exchange for monetary compensation. It could not be for free. No one would care or remember.”

It was not known that there were Benders in Bridgetown, which is why it was chosen. South Road Fair has several who are powerful. You two are a surprise and you must be stronger than the four of us, but our mistress will take care of you. She is favored by the Master of the Sunken Wood.” The girls know nothing more, and the witch whom they call mistress is still at large.

Wild Jaguar is still unsatisfied with the answer. "I got it. You created the problem, and then planned to get coins for solving it. But you still did not tell us what was your plan for Bridgetown after you'd get enough coins, nor what it has to do with decreasing the number of the people!"

Too populated with people?” Whisper scoffs incredululously. “We made the right decision to after this witch. We must find her. She will likely recruit more gullibe fools to do her bidding; and like the coward she is, run and hide while others take the fall. I wonder who this, ‘Master of the Sunken Wood’ is.” Turning to his friend, he adds, "She is repeating some religious nonsense or philosophy she has been taught. I get it. They intended to go somewhere else after being paid to get rid of the bats that they brought. I clever scheme." Understanding that any further questioning would be circular, because he doubted that the girls knew any more, Whisper suggests that they dispatch the lackeys and move on after the witch.

Quickly ending the other two acolytes, the young men follow the somewhat obvious path taken by their sought enemy. The witch had followed an elevated path through the swamp. The path was straight, but there was standing water on each side. It does not seem likely that any other direction would have been chosen.

The path leads to a very large, deformed tree with a hollow at its base that could easily allow a person to crawl up inside of it. The witch, however, is standing on a lower limb, leaning against the trunk. “Persistent little benders are you not? Both of you look to have some kinship with nature. You should join my cause. I can direct your hand to greater accomplishments than those to which you would naturally aspire. The other option is to feed you to my two wolves. What do you say?”

Two normal looking wolves emerge from behind the tree, each one on either side of it. They are growling and the ridge of hair is standing on their backs, indicating full aggression. Though appearing to be normal animals, they are obviously trained.

Wild jaguar whispers to Whisper's ear "Let's pretend we join her cause until she runs again. Then when we learn more about her weaknesses and strengths, and she will relax her guard and trust us more.. Then we could forge another plan for her, even very fast.. ending her." If his comrade won't protest, he will reply to the witch "Agreed. We will be your new disciples."
