The Planes are relatively infinite. You could keep trying to climb Mount Celestia, but you'll never reach the next layer up the mountain unless you are led to a portal or waypoint by an appropriate denizen. You'll seem to keep getting only a little bit higher, but the top will never really seem any closer, and the bottom probably won't be much further than when you started climbing, however long ago. Once you find a denizen who will lead you, or once you achieve suitable enlightenment along the path of lawful good, or once you find some secret portal that doesn't really belong there, then it won't take very long to climb to the next terrace or "layer" of Mount Celestia.
