The new Antipaladin, Despot, Corruptor issue #312

Unholy crap!

The antipaladin can easily take out a party of PC's. I just created a 15th level Antipaladin (CR15) and there's NO WAY that my group of 4 10th level PC's will be able to take him out.

I think the Despot creates a better long-term bad guy, but can you imagine an army of low-level antipaladins running around with him?

The Corruptor strikes me as the best anti-cleric, with his "Smite Heathen" ability. He would fit well into a campaign where you want to find a new way to challenge your clerics, besides just having another 'evil cult' to defeat. This guy is way more cool than any 'evil cult.' He is the epitome of the faith-drainer!

What'd the rest of y'all think?

Umm, you are surprised that a CR 15 creature will have no trouble with CR 10 opponents?

Yes. CR 15/EL+5 is typically a "very difficult" encounter with estimated one or two party member deaths. This guy at CR 15 is one where he will mop up on 6-7 party members (and stop to coup de grace them too ;)

What I've experienced in measuring and playing out CR's with the RPGA and at home, I've seen that CR's are usually way too weak and an EL+5 is usually a damnable joke with players making the usual 'whines' like "my character _ALMOST_ died." ..but no character ever does unless they are just really dumb AND unlucky.

The antipaladin kicks butt. After looking him over, a +3EL could easily take out a party of 4 at APL 10.

What leads you to think that the Antipaladin so much more puissant than any other 15th-level character? I'm looking him over, and not really seeing anything that's overwhelmingly powerful. He has one really potent ability against weaker opponents, but otherwise he's mostly a specialized paladin who happens to be evil. Casting Contagion once a week is nasty, death knell not so much. If he has the time to waste casting death knell...the battle was already over.

Even a party of 10th level characters could drop him, with some luck. Phantasmal Killer is a good candidate, as are plenty of direct damage spells. He's not particularly invulnerable, and has poor Reflex and Will saves.

Why do you see him as so powerful? I'd think a 15th level sorceror, wizard or cleric would be much more dangerous, if they had some distance. Heck, a 15th level archer would be nastier.

Especially the cleric against characters 5 levels lower than him. Blashpemy+summon monster=dead PCs. No save. All he has to do is live long enough to cast Blasphemy.

That's the ability that makes him so cool. He get's massive extra damage against any character that is lower level than him. Plus the other 'smite' stuff, etc.
