Bale was also in American Psycho (in which he played the lead role) and Shaft.

And Equilibrium, which might give a better idea of his suitableness for this role (from the physicallity angle at least).

Bale has done consistently well in consistently disappointing movies (American Psycho. Reign of Fire, Equilibrium) -- he can really act, he does carry a particular sense of menace, and he pulls of GREAT action scenes with utter conviction (see Equilbrium especially).

Christopher Nolan... has potential. I don't think it's yet clear if he's truly talented or has had one really great movie and one clear misstep, both blind luck and is in fact nothing special. This will probably be the project that lets us know.

David S. Goyer is also co-writer of JSA, JSA/JLA: Virtue and Vice, Hawkman and others, in collaboration with long-time partner Geoff Johns. He tends to take extended leaves of absence due to his Hollywood work, but Goyer and Johns plan these ahead of time, so their meta-plots don't suffer for it.

I think I would rather have seen his partner write it... (Geoff Johns.) I have high hopes for the film but WB seems to have issues with their own characters.... How and why I do not know.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but then again, I am always cautiously optimistic, if the project shows a bit of promise. I am not really familiar with the comics, so I can't comment on accuracy or faithfulness to the source material, but with that bunch of actors, I think even a bad script could yield a good movie.

I find it curious that they are going with a unknown like Christian Bale as Batman.
Bale is "unknown"?!?!

uhh... my wife, many of her friends, and the 13 DVD's we have of his movies will beg to differ.
I would agree if you said "not a Big Name", but an "unknown"?

No.

For his first role alone (Empire of the Sun) he would not be an unknown.
He was the STAR of a Steven Spielberg film, for gosh sakes, and pulled off one of the most respected child performaces ever shot (AFAIK).

American Psycho
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Empire of the Sun
Equilibrium
Henry V
Laurel Canyon
Little Women
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Newsies
Reign of Fire
Shaft
Swing Kids
Velvet Goldmine

Interesting. Latest news I've seen:

Title change: New title is Batman Begins.

Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) has been cast as Ra's Al Ghul. Woo hoo! :)

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I am worried that the film has both Ra's Al Ghoul and Jonathan "Scarecrow" Crane. Hopefully, Crane will just be Dr. Crane and not a supervillain in this one. I'd hate to see this series go down the same road as the last with 2, 3, or 4 villains in one film (unless one villain was one of the lesser guys like Killer Croc, who could never be more than hired muscle).
