I'm actually running a game (see my sig) right now with hobgoblin as a PC race at ECL +0. I don't really anticipate it being a problem—the bonuses are good, but that's basically all that's there. I probably should have gone canon and given them LA +1, but no big deal. Be interesting to see how it goes.

I'm just going to point to the anthropomorphic baleen whale from Savage Species.

Size Large, so 10' Reach plus bonuses to Grapple Checks.

A total of +20 in ability modifiers : +8/+4/+4/+0/+4/+0.

+9 natural armor. (That's plus nine.)

3d8 Monstrous Humanoid HD (which give Fighter BAB) and no level adjustment.

I think a ABW Bbn1 compares fairly favourably to a Human Bbn4...

Personally, I think Wood Elves are the munchkin race of choice.

+2 dex and strength and NO ecl I always end up with PCs with Wood Elf archers.....*rolls eyes*

The con adjustment bites t hem in the end tho...lol

Older D&D: DUAL CLASSING

3e: No ability penalties, Bonus Skill and Feat. Free Level Mixing (no favored class.) Lots of 1 level dipping goodness!

Course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
